Ensure that you've got a software firewall enabled and also have your Anti-Virus up-to-date.

To make sure you're safe moving forward, check that you have the latest Service Pack. For Vista the current one is SP2. It's also worth making sure that you have all critical updates too.

You can do this from Windows update or you can download the Service Pack manually.

It seems to me to be a good old fashioned protection racket; these anti-virus/firewall etc firms are the ones sending out these viruses and then selling you the remedy.

It's like something out of The Godfather, but with nerds & computers as opposed to lunatic Italian mobsters...

Yup, protection racket. Very sophisticated software, well organised business (you can buy a franchise!) and incredibly hard to catch. Nerds they aren't, though they are happy to have people think that. Nasty people in reality.
