How long have we had it? When did it first appear in PCs & laptops?

TIA

USB 2 came out late 2001.

I have a P4 which didn't originally comne with USB 2 though. I think most machines by 2003 were all USB2.

is it possible to upgrade a machine from USB1 to USB2?

And is there much significant increase in speed?

My photoprinter is USB2 and whenever i switch it on I get a message that saysif i plug it into a USB2 port it will run faster. The speed seems ok to me now, how much faster can it get??

You need a USB 2 card. I purchased one for £11.00 & just stuffed it in.

Gave me USB sockets at the back of the computer (not very handy) so just got a compatable extension hub as well

I got a NEC USB2 card with a front panel that fits into a drive bay, which I had spare.

So I have 4 x USB1.1 ports on the back (motherboard), 2 x USB2 ports on the back (on the card) and 3 x USB2 ports on the front!

Cost about £11!

As others have mentioned its a cheap upgrade and well worth teh cash. IIRC transfer rates for USB1 are 12Mb/sec and USB2 is 440Mb/sec, so quite a difference!

WOW... thanks Mambo n all.. now that seems like a worthwhile upgrade... didn't think things could get faster.. and not that expensive either by the looks of things :)
