I think I remember seeing somewhere (though I can't find it again) a posting where a member said he'd added some ATF to his fuel tank to help clean the injectors, etc

I was wondering whether this is the case and would it be good practice. I found some Dextron III in the garage (it is quite old though) and didn't know whether adding this when I next fill up with diesel would be a good idea or not.

Cheers,

Kevin

I think there are properly designed injector cleaners available on the market and I would be inclined to use these. The dexron 3 is designed to go in your auto gearbox and really nowhere else!

Y'know, I'm sure it was Mr Walker when I asked about oil flushing agents. I swear Ian said that I could add a drop of ATF and then drain the oil out?

This was yonks ago, and I'm not 100%, so sorry if I've tarred you with an ATF'y brush, Ian!!

About 200 miles before a service I have added ATF to the engine oil. I have found that it cleans the inside of the engine. So far I have not had any comebacks or issues with it. I understand what Grobber is saying, but if it keeps a gearbox clean then...............................?

Ditto, I always sling a litre of ATF in shortly before a service....keeps things very nice and clean.

Thanks guys,

That's very useful. It sounds as though it will be worth putting a little in the engine oil prior to a service, etc

But what about in the fuel tank to clean that system out?

i have used 300 diesel mercs as taxis in york for 10 years i have always every month tipped 3 litres of atf in the fuel tank it is the best fuel cleaner in the world if i change a fuel filter i fill the new filter up with neat atf the car feels fantastic after it was a top engineer i carried once from stutgart that told me to use it i have ever since i also do the same as the other lads and put about 1 litre in the engine oil 200 miles before an oil change

yes it will be fine on all cdis one taxi driver in york has 420000 on his 320 cdi and has put atf in since 70000 it keeps your injectors and pump clean
