Im going to fit a new v belt this weekend but do you need to replace the tensioner at the same time as a matter of course ?

Depends on the state of the tensioner assembly/bearing obviously but routinely-NO. The thing that tends to chew up poly V belts is a partial failure of the alternator overrun clutch pulley.
