V220 Auto Gearbox Problems

Hi all,

I have a gearbox prob that I could do with some help with.

I have a 1999 V220 CDi auto.

It seems to drive ok, but nothing special, and is particularly sluggish when pulling away from a standstill - say from a road junction.
If I clog it to pull away, the engine/transmission "mushes" rather than wheelspins away.

If I drive very gently and accelerate very slowly (learner speeds slowly) it will change up through the gears normally, just.
If I drive it even marginally enthusiastically it is reluctant to change gear and stops changing at 3rd.
It will rev away quite happily but won't change up to 4th.

If I'm cruising in 4th (after driving like Miss Daisy to get there) and then either brake hard enough for it to change down, or use kickdown, it will change down to third and refuse to change back up again.

The only way I can get it back into 4th is to slow right down, almost to a standstill, and then accelerate very slowly, or knock the gear selector into neutral momentarily (at high speed) and then back into Drive.

After trawling through the posts for advice on this forum, I've stripped the inlet manifold & cleaned out all the black gunk from the EGR and associated area,
I've replaced the vaccum sensor by the rhs wheelarch,
and also replaced the boost sensor on the bulkhead just above the manifold.

I have no idea whether it's a gearbox or engine problem.

It doesn't seem to be in limp mode for either and there are no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard.

I'm now at a loss for what to try next.

It's driving me nuts and I'm tired of driving the van like a girl!

I'd appreciate it if you could put your collective heads together and perhaps point me in the right direction...as long as it isn't towards the nearest MB Dealer!

Thanks in advance,

Rob

What sort of mileage has she covered?

It's done just under 100k, but it seems in good shape...apart from the obvious snag.

I've considered changing the transmission fluid, but been told it's a sealed for life unit and have been warned off about trying to top it up or changing it.

As an aside, IIRC the V Class (FWD) gearbox is not an M-B one?

Hmmmm....tricky, well, initially you need to eliminate a lack of engine power, that will do weird things to the TCM shift strategy, like delayed or no upshifts except for when blah blah etc......

Also, if it's installed the ABS system can have a similar effect if it sees a discrepancy in wheel speed(s), unevenly worn or a mismatch in tyre profiles can feature here, so that's also something that needs to be investigated.

Either way, your first port of call is to find someone with a Star diag system and get it plugged in for a full onboard systems test.

Thanks Mate.

I kind of know my way round basic mechanical principles, but the newer generation of engines / gearboxes with their electronic control is a little beyond me.

I think you're right and a few quid on a diagnostics rig might be money well spent.

I'll get myself booked in on one as soon as I can.

I'll send in an update with the findings, but I suspect I'm in for a pasting financially to rectify this one. :(

I appreciate the advice. Please feel free to continue to post if you have any more ideas.

Thanks again,

Rob :thumb:

(Incidentaly, I checked and it's a ZF gearbox, also used in Citroens, and is generally regarded as being a reliable autobox)

Yes, utter cack.
