Hi all I have just bought a v220 with a gearbox issue, sometimes it wont change up the gears untill i switch the engine off and restart it.
I want to check the oil level of the autobox but I cant find a dipstick for the box,or level bungs can anyone help?

2001 v220 diesel auto.

do you mean the C220 ? if so, then it has the 722.6xx auto box. you need to either get the correct dipping tool as mb dont supply one, or make one yourself.

get a curtain wire and poke it down the auto lube filler pipe till it hits the bottom, (oil needs to be hot so make sure you have done a good few miles, and leave the engine running) once your wire has bit the bottom, withdraw and measure the depth of the oil, it needs to be between 54 and 65 mm deep.

I am not too sure where yours is, mine is at the rear left as you look from the front. the top of the tube has a blanking plug that needs to be broken off, but these are bought from MB for next to nothing

v220 is front wheel drive (it's a V class MPV, based on the old 638 Vito) so no idea whether the gearbox is like other M-B models or not. I know the v280 had a VW engine!

Think it's doubtful anyone will have the dimensions for a DIY ATF dipstick. Your best bet might be to take it to a garage that can read the fault codes and see what that shows up. Sounds like it's going into 'limp home' mode.

It has no dipstick.

Those boxes are ZF made and utter toilet. They just dont last. I expect it will need some TLC. Get the codes read first.

It's probably a 723 gearbox which is completely different to the car ones.

Isn't the V220 the long wheel based W220 as that's what the dealers refered to mine as? Is this refering to Chassis type or Class and engine combo?

Hi Chris, sounds like the TCM is going into limp mode, to make progress you need to get the trouble codes, post em here and then let's see.
