hi everyone..looking at puchasing a s class 320 cdi 2005 model..which engine is likely to be fitted v6 or inline 6 ? how do i check airmatic suspension is working correctly ? best internet site for vhicle hpi check ?
any known faults to look out for ?

The V6CDi is an amazing engine and a triumph of reliability and dependability. I love mine and I think the 7g is the best thing ever and its is so smooth and fast changing I don't know how I coped without it.....

Give him a break - he's only got 11 posts and will take you at your word.

I've had both and both have been fine. The V6 is smoother which you may find important when driving an S.

A quick scroll through the "engine section" in the technical board will reveal all. I am tired now. I've said my bit countless times and its getting a little boring.

Anwyay, the question is an non event as IIRC all 2005 S classes will be W220's and will not be the V6/7g. IIRC the 221 didnt grace itself until 2006. I could be wrong.

If you're looking at the 2005 S320 CDi, it will be a W220 IL6 mated to the 5 speed gearbox.

Whats your budget, you might not be too far from buying a W221?

my budget is up to 16k..car im looking at is below 7k..any ideas on how to check correct operation of airmatic suspension ? can i visualy see road travel height change by actuating switch whilst engine is at tickover ?
many thanks for all replys including *** which made me chuckle.

Below 7k its definately a W220. Im not sure I can help you but £16k may get you into a leggy early W221. Others will say that the V6 is great, I may not but read through the technical sections and get yourself clued up with turbo seals, inlet port shut off motors, engine bearings and 7g valve blocks. One thing to consider is that although the W221 is the newer model, you will be buying into an early version where bugs weren't ironed out. A late W220 will be as good as that model ever was, which was actually pretty good, and might be more peice of mind. The I6 and 5speed box are very highly acclaimed and whilst not as smooth as the V6 engine, are hardly rough. That being said, the W221 is a marvellous car and we dont hear of many issues with it.

Airmatic wise. Operate the buttons, the car should raise and lower. The car should not be sat on its belly, nor should it be sat one side higher than the other. Airmatic is a great system when it works. I didn't know it was a standard fitment on S320cdi, thought only the top 500 models plus got it.

With a £16K budget I'd go as late as possible which will put you in V6 territory.

Provenance is everything when you have a choice of cars.
