V6CDi loss of power

A hefty bill is that added to all the other warranty stuff since your ownership I can understand your feelings I and many other would I am sure feel the same. However as DM mentioned to sell after spending that many £'s(even the Scottish variety;);)) and not getting the value out of the spend would be a waste and having made that mistake in the past myself I can tell you that you will not get any more money for the car so I would hang on in there.

The V6 is such a smooth operator but is blighted with crap 'accoutrements bolted to it' It beggars belief why MB have not been able to sort it - or if I were being a cynic for once I might just say it is all about building in an assured future revenue generator:rolleyes:

Continue to enjoy it "things can only get better" or so the Labour party once said:doh:

PS on the issue of the gear box on cold starts: - if it is any consolation my 5 speed TT box is the same so I hold 2nd for 2/300 yards or so after which all is smooth and unruffled peace and tranquillity return to my world....

I'm of the opinion that a bad car always has plenty more bills waiting to happen. I've actively moved on, usually a four figure bill is enough for me.

That's always the unknown though however I am of a similar view but wherever possible before spending any money on it:( as I said having done that once I learnt a costly lesson.

I probably will end up keeping it. The jolt has never been resolved I've learned to live with it. I was loaned a brand spanking CLS350 last year when it was in under warranty and it did the same. I've tried C and S modes and the car does it in both. As for the engine there appears to be a modified manifold etc. mines one of the very first so I don't struggle to believe this. The inlet port motor from speaking to the guys at the garage and it's positioning down wind of turbo really is a crap bit of design but as you say if it were perfect folk would never change cars or need new parts.

I only thought about unloading it when that "wanted" thread appeared. I'm not actively advertising the car and I webuyanycar. Comed it and the trade prices are horrific. It stays.

It stays and if I get my monies worth out of this repair and there other grim surprises I'll be happy but I've got that nagging doubt that David could be right and it's a bad example. No one else's 211 seems to be nearly as problematic.

If you think that what about a warranty? WD or otherwise? It might limit the exposure.

On an 82k mile car. The level of cover wouldn't be great and what I would have spent on cover I've paid out but if I don't need to claim or they dont pay put then it's a grand out the window

I thought that the top cover was available up to 100k with WD. Could easily be wrong - it's a while since I looked at it.

Pretty depressing reading this thread - hope you get the shed back to good working order soon!!

Have had the idea of a move to a CLS320 CDI at the back of my mind for in a year or two's time but I couldn't chance any of the chunky repair bills mentioned. Maybe I need to be thinking of the petrol V6 version instead - my old W208 has only thrown up a couple of unexpected bills in the order of £100 getting on for my 6th year in the car. Hopefully I have not spoken too soon here!

Anyway fingers crossed this is your last big expense for a while!

Same here.....

I have factored in valve body replacement, inlet shi-t off motor aswell as the torque converter but this soon becomes silly money and questions the cars worthiness...

Funny you should mention that, but has anyone had any of these troubles with their 280CDIs?

All cases of swirl flaps, inlet shut-off motors, limp-home mode, etc in the V6 CDIs, it always seems to happen to the 320s.

Or is that just the law of averages (there being more 320s about than 280s)?

Poll time? I have had it on star three times but still the car has this jerk to it which is either the valvebody or inlet.

A fix is needed otherwise as these cars approach the 100k mark the value will bomb as awareness spreads of the looming failures and the cost to fix.

Bar of soap anyone? branded MB.

280cdi vs 320cdi

The 320cdi is fitted to more cars than the 280cdi but the 280cdi will have outsold the 320cdi in the 211 so I would expect there to be a 50:50. There is another variation of the engine in the Vans and Vito's.

Other than lower capacity injectors (Mactech posted this and he'll know) what other differences are present on the 280cdi. Someone like Olly or Alex Crow would be really handy as they'll know. If the 280cdi does without swirl flaps etc that would be very interesting, doubtful though.

mobeyone: you'll lose power if its the manifold/shut off motor. If its crap gear changes the valve body could be at fault. I bet that is what is next given the luck I've had and the jolt I get from cold.

I'd also like to know what my specialist is meaning by a modified manifold needing self tapping screws. I never knew there were any revisions to my car other than a turbo seal. Modified manifolds/different screws is this a yarn I am been spun whilst they struggle to attach the part to my car

Hi, am sure you will find the inlet port shutoff system problems equally likely on the 280 as the 320 - both have the same system.

The thing with the manifold and the bolts....the manifolds have various items bolted to them, such as the fuel filter housing and inlet port shut off motor. To this end, the manifolds have cast lugs that these bolts screw into. In the name of reduced production costs, these lugs do not have threads tapped into them, and the bolts are of a 'self tapping' design. When assembled in the factory simply screwing the bolts in cuts the threads.
This is the case with many cast aluminium engine parts that have low load mountings bolted to them, and often wrong foots the casual DIYer.

Did you get the car back today ?

No. I guess the self tapping screws haven't come. Quite handy actually as I'm paid tomorrow so I'd rather pay then for obvious reasons...

I've not called him today so that I've got no means of getting the car due to my hours so I can get it after I'm paid. He is taking his time, I'll take mine

Very common in "BMW circles". Garage I use says they do a lot of 320d's, but they have a more serious flap issue than the Mercedes range.

No-one has done it for a Mercedes V6CDi but I'd love to have this done if I have the car and this manifold goes, which it will -maybe just not in the time I have this car.

Can you direct me in the area of the DIY plate to protect the motor. ?
I will research that again for you.
I hate to say, your car may need a manifold at some stage, mine was very gummed up and worn.
Yes, I am convinced that this will occur.

I have no wish to be faced with a costly & repetitive repair necessitating continual renewal of manifolds seals & motors.

The composite modification which you have outlined above would simultaneously cure these faults permanently.

We have specialist engineers participating in this forum who have the capability of producing & embodying this revision both to their & our advantage.

Does this problem only happen to the V6 or the IL6 also
