Just perusing the internet this morning planning for my eventual change of car in a couple of months and I can't stop looking at ML & GL V8 CDI's and the ML63.

I've got used to low 20's mpg in the Discovery, so that's not that much of a concern really, but I do like to know what I'm letting myself in for.

Any real world mpg figures on both would be appreciated (I know it's all relative)

And for those V8 CDI owners; how's the reliability? Anything you would see as being good advice would be well received.

I'll be watching this thread closely - as some know, I'm considering a GL420 soon.

However I've also been previously tempted by an R500 as well as a GL500 so on that logic perhaps I should add the ML63 to my list too :D

We normally get mid 20's from our W203, close to 30 if we're sensible with the cruise control...

V8 Turbodiesels are a lovely thing to have under the bonnet. To me, the nature of the ML doesn't suit the 6.2 petrol V8.

Only based on 24 hours ownership, but last night the trip was showing 6.7 mpg when Mrs D pulled on the drive after collecting her ML63

After a 10 mile urban drive (stop/start @ 30 mph), 10 mile motorway drive (cruise control @ 50 mph), and 10 mile motorway drive (cruise control @ 70 mph), we managed 20.0 mpg.

Over the last 11,498 miles it's averaged 16.7 mpg and 35 mph.

HTH

I average across all driving 19mpg... I didnt buy it for MPG... i bought it because i wanted it!!
For a 4x4 its "very" quick and outwits allot of people, in Black.. it looks evil, you get allot of looks as they are very rare.... More than welcome to meet up for a drive Lee...

Thanks Bobby, I'll be watching your progress with your ML with a keen eye from now on.

Thanks a lot Greg, I appreciate the offer and I will probably take you up nearer the date, we could have a late autumn MBClub meet. :D

I can live with 20 mpg (as I'm finding out at times) but I would struggle mentally to go any lower than that, if I'm being honest with myself.

Before I bought the Discovery, I negotiated on an ML 320 CDi Sport but the lack of seven seats was pretty much the deciding factor and it may eventually come down to that with the choice of GL or ML.

Alx on here has the V8 420 CDI, he loves it.

I've just been researching the Brabus D8 chip, it'll take the V8 up to 350bhp and the peak torque to 800nm.

This may be the best 'compromise' if I were to buy the GL, with there being no 63 available.

I had an ML420 for a week, drove it down to the south of France , so had a good cross section of motorway miles and back roads.

Averaged 27mpg over 2000 miles, with average speed on motorways about 90mph.

Great car, and great engine, but didn't like being hustled at all on the backcountry roads. Amazing on motorway.

I think he has a Kleeman chip on his :D

They have launched the GL63 AMG but only on the recent facelift.

The GL 450 I had the use of over Xmas last year coved 600 miles on a tankful (100 litres). It averaged 27mpg. This was a mix of motorways and racing (and beating) Golf GTIs.

TBH I didn't know MB did a V8 Diesel in the UK!

They don't anymore.

Last one was in the UK was the GL and that was in 2010/11. ML stopped in 2010.

I can't recall the E420 CDi being sold here at all, just the ML and GL.

The E420cdi was only LHD.

The newer V6s at 265bhp aren't far off the V8 power wise, and the V6 Brabus D6 is 313bhp now so plenty.

We'll probably see the V8 quitely dissappear altogether and a new two turbo six appear

Thanks, that's good to know that the mpg is consistent even with different drivers.
