Vacuum pipe mystery E300 diesel OM606

Am re posting this as I mucked it up first time round. Found this pipe lying near the battery, which is on the right hand side of my car, it's left hand drive, when sucked it opens/closes the valve on the air inlet tube, so it must need to be connected to something, any ideas?

Hi I'm still in a quandry with this, just asking if anybody can enlighten me as to where the vacuum pipe should be connected, it's lying in the battery bay with no home and I cannot see anything that it should be connected to, any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
can you follow the pipe and see where the other end is connected to and post back.

i'll then trace mine back from that point and see where the loose end on yours should be connected to.

i have a RHD 606 E300D, so should be the same

Belive it or not that pipe dosent go anywhere! It is a vent for the vacuum system, I have 2 e300 diesels and they both have the same pipe going nowhere.
 
Thanks for that, but it's very strange, as when you suck on the end of it the valve opens and closes, seems odd doesn't it, but then again why would it end up near the battery in any case? I'll wait to see what Derek (SilverSaloon) comes up with, cheers.
 
hi

i had a look at mine quickly just now (its dark now so couldnt see a lot) - the pipe from the air inlet that you see moving goes direct to a vacuum box bolted near the side of the air filter.

Does yours go to this box?

in the morning, when its light i'll check to see where the pipe that goes from that box ends up (i have a feeling this may be the pipe, rather than direct from the air inlet).... hence my question in post 3
 
Don't worry about it, it's only there to make the intake throttle make the EGR valve work better.

Best off without.
 
There are solenoid valves mounted on a bracket under the air filter.

When the solenoid valve which switches vacuum to the EGR throttle is OFF, the valve connects the EGR throttle to atmosphere to allow the EGR throttle to return to the rest position.

The pipe to atmosphere ends in the false bulkhead.

The OP has seen correct operation of this part of the system - the EGR valve may also have been moving a bit, but, you can't see that!

The logic for this pipe ending there is to make sure that the air drawn into the vacuum system is reasonably clean.

As all the air drawn into the vacuum system ends up in the crankcase, some people fit a small filter over the end of the pipe.

In summary, it's nothing to worry about.
 
OK, well thanks to all of you, still seems a bit odd to leave a pipe there in my laymans mind but at least now I know it's nothing to worry about and I will make sure its tucked away somewhere clean that stays dry as well!!
 
Orphan pipe

Not a hi-jack I hope, since still vacuum pipes, but probably a different pipe. There's a black one which terminates in the dashboard behind the binnacle on my LHD E250D estate OM605, and which appears to be 'supply to cabin' according to the EPC/WIS. It isn't connected to anything, however, and whilst the wheel was off and the binnacle out I had a thorough look for loose ends without any success. Furthermore, with the engine running there appears to be no 'suck' at this pipe. It originates on the pump at the rear/side of the IP and is bundled with the brown/blue key cut-off pipe and a greyish one. The engine key stop works fine. Any thoughts, or does this one also just vent to atmosphere for some reason. I do not have the luxury of inlet manifold valves in my IM or crosssover pipe, just a sort of throttle butterfly immediately after the air cleaner operated by the throttle linkage, connected across the engine, which must mess with the air velocity/volume according to throttle position.

Grateful for any ideas.
