I always thought of him as a sort of "UK clone " of Perry Como--- but none the worse for that. Not my cup of tea but seemed a genuinely pleasant bloke. RIP.

I remember I liked him when I was a child, RIP Val.

Met him at Dad's golf club in the late 60's and would not describe him as pleasant! It was a SPARKS charity do with quite a few celebs - Chris Lee, Leo Genn, Douglas Bader, Kenny Lynch amongst others - and he upset everyone by refusing to stay and hand out the raffle prizes. I spoke to both Chris Lee and Kenny Lynch - and they were both nice guys!

Was bought up on his songs (and The Dubliners and Clancy Brothers).

Fond memories, especially Danny O'Rafferty's Motor Car :)

RIP.
