does anyone know how to find out if a vat reg number is genuine or who it is registered to

number 920273943

cheers all

a friend has had a job done and thinks the lads are not vat registered but are trying to charge him vat on the job.speedybikers link confirms its a registered number but does not give the company its registered to.
cheers

Finding the checksum is easy - it has been posted before do a search , but only by phoning HMCE will you find out if the boys are being naughty .

And yes it is a genuine GB number .

[email protected].

The number is valid, but there's no way of finding out who it's registered to (data protection nonsense).

Phone HMRC, they are very helpful and vat fraud is a serious offense, the guy will get prosecuted if He's charging but isn't registered.

They are helpful alright -
Interestingly in this case HMCE aren't interested in restoring the money to the customer - they will prosecute , but you will have to take civil action to get the VAT back.

HMCE don't exist anymore and haven't done for a while. They are HMRC - Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs . C & E were absorbed into Inland Revenue under a reorganisation of the cabinet ;)

HMRC couldn't prosecute an individual to reclaim illegally charged VAT on behalf of someone else. Their prosecution would be for claiming to be VAT registered when they weren't. The individual charged the VAT would need to take a civil action as they were the one who had been charged the VAT illegally.

They keep the old www.hmce.gov.uk website as a nice reminder to all those whose life they have made a misery of in past years - how sweet.

Thankfully I have a lady who attends to things like VAT and after 14 years we have just recovered £4K in wrongly assessed VAT .

You would have thought they could have ordered the return of the VAT as part of the proceeds of crime act 2002 - but all they car about is getting their bit.

I'm glad you pointed that one out ........
Serves me right for not being a stickler to detail and stating "see they keep the old domain and redirect to......"

Still , it's nice now , you can have your heart sucked out in one place .
