The new regime came into force 01/04/2017.
AFAIK the additional £355 is for the 2nd to 6th year of registration. i.e. five years of additional VED for >£40k list price cars.
Now 01/04/2017 plus 6 years = 01/04/2023.
So used car VED is going to start falling in the near future for 6 year old vehicles.
Q: Have I understood the regulations correctly?

Interesting point. I don't know the answer but I will be following to see what people think.

It's like trying to find a 2005 model year car and avoiding the ones with a registration date after 31 March 2005, but then it's already priced in the value of the car.

It was March 23rd 2006?

Who knows but 500 quid is a chunk of change. Puts me off 40k list cars.

However with the price of 40k cars new now sooner or later even a bloomin peugeot will be a "premium" car

Tell me about it. My CLS55 was registered in May 2006. But hey, you gotta pay to play.

I thought it was 5 years , I was hoping I wouldn't have to pay it this March , car was registered 28.03.2018.

I believe it is five years, my Dad's C Class is the same age as yours. His tax expires on the 1st July this year and the surcharge is coming back as expires on the 30th June this year.

If you put your reg into totalcarcheck.co.uk and scroll down to the road tax information it tells you when the VED surcharge expires.

Mine was registered 06/17 , for some reason my monthly DD went from £45 -> £15 in November `22.

Five years + five months after date at first registration but lets keep that quiet if you don`t mind. 🤭

I should be for the first six years since registration , i believe Y1 the dealer pays - Y2 -> Y6 the owner pays.

Five years from the second time the vehicle is taxed.

So thats why mine has dropped :thumb:

I bought it at 6m old , dealer paid the first year and i also paid the second six months of the first year when i got the car , decent earner for the Government.

Mine was first registered 28.03.2018 , pre reg , I bought it on 18.04.2018 . So technically taxed for the second time ?
Yes that should be the case. My Dad's car was registered on the 28.03.2018 a day after yours but he bought it pre-registered in the July hence the expiry date being later.

Out of curiosity did you buy yours from a Sytner Dealer? I know back in 2018 they had a huge stock of pre-reg W205s with quite a bit knocked off them. I also bought a C250d at the same time, my car and my Dad's were both registered towards the end of March as is yours.

Yes , Sytners Bath , C250d 4matic PP. Bargain - £14k off list with 55miles on the clock. I think Sytners had about 40 W205 all high spec which were pre facelift. Mine was actually built in July 2017 so they must have been sat somewhere as stock but MB must have unloaded them prior to the release of the 2018 facelift.

Yes, definitely the same deal I got and also my Dad at Sytner Sunderland. Mine was a 250d PP 4matic and his a 220d 4matic. Mine was an August 2017 build, I looked at a few and noted they were all registered around the same time so definitely part of a stock clearance.

I had a 2016 E coupe but needed 4 doors and as soon as I spotted the W205 for sale in Bath on a Wednesday I was driving it home on Saturday , best deal I've had on a "new" car. Still being offered £22k on WBAC - only problem a similar W206 is now circa £54k , I don't think I'll be trading it in anytime soon, currently on 28,000 miles and like new.

Re-starting this topic as I'm a little annoyed but not surprised by the application of the VED premium.
My car was registered in April 2019 but my V5 states that I have to pay the additonal premium until end of August 2024.
Only just noticed this as I was expecting my VED to reduce from May onwards and decided to check.
I didn't manage to find specifics on this application of the premium but assume it's hidden somewhere in a gov document.
