I have only had my 2013 E220 CDI Diesel Estate for two months and yesterday I had the warning Vehicle Rising Please Wait followed by Malfunction. The rear of the car is way low the passenger side is lower than the drivers side. No Matter what I have tried the bags will not inflate. Has any member had a similar problem and found the fault also what did it cost to put right. Any help appreciated. Another point I would like to ask will it be safe enough to drive half a mile to the garage?

Well suspect the pump, yes you can drive to a garage with the rear of the car on the bump stops it will not be very comfortable, make sure the garage has a star, that can test the pumps ability to replace air in the small tank that supplies the air bags.the cost if it is the pump is around £200 for the pump and about another £100 for the diagnostics and changing the pump if that is what is causing the problem.

Thankyou for your answer it is most helpful. Will a hand held OBD 2 diagnostic scanner show the fault? Or is that too much to ask

Well you can give it a try, your estate will I suspect will ony have air bags at the rear,it might just be the ride height sensor, which has broken ,but the fact you have the car saying wait while vehicle rising would suggest it knows the rear is low,but cannot pump up the airbags,if the sensor is defective the car does not know the rear is too low, suggest you get somebody to start the car and you listen for the pump to start,if you cannot hear it search for the fuse and check that, that might also be in the rear of the car.

I can hear the pump but it will not raise the car. You are correct it only has air bags at the rear. I have a diagnostic device being delivered today I will see what it says tht's if it works.

There could be several reasons but the vehicle being lower on the passenger side than the drivers side suggests that the air spring on the passenger side is the problem - whether it’s the air spring itself or the piperwork connecting it.

As suggested get someone with Star to diagnose it properly if you can’t work it out yourself with the code reader. Personally I would avoid driving it though, as it could put unnecessary stresses and load on the damper(s), and damage them too.

The design could be different on my ML to your E, however I had an airbag fail whilst driving. I limped home and to the marque specialist covering around 20 miles in that time. They replaced the air spring and within a few hundred miles I had to replace the corresponding damper.

I didn’t get it recovered as it was at the peak of pandemic and I didn’t want to be with anyone unnecessarily. I cannot say for sure that driving caused the damper failure, however it is quite a coincidence if not. Either way it was a blooming expensive exercise!

Thanks for your reply why wont a code reader diagnose the fault? I take you point about Star that is the way to go. In any case it is booked into the garage next Thursday. The garage is less than half a mile away from my house
so surely it will make that journey OK. Both sides are down but the passenge side is the worse of the 2. I saw someone using a code reader on you tube and it showed bothe air bags inflating and diagnosed a leak that's why I bought it. No matter what it's still has to go in to the garage and I suspect they will have star and get a better idea than me. Can I ask you how much it cost you for the repair in the end.

Not all code readers will reveal all things and I believe STAR can interrogate more data than a generic code reader.

In terms of cost, you don't want to know!

Aftermarket airbags are relatively cheap and sometimes good quality, aftermarket dampers/struts are generally poor and a bit pricier, whereas Mercedes dampers/struts are perfect but very pricey.

Changing the airbags appears to be an average DIY job reuirng just basic tools, a jack and axles stands from what i have read. Im confident if mine go I will be able to change them in an evening

Hi
Just to let you know the fault was a rear passenger side air spring that had been damaged. The garage charged me £490.42 to replace it. The airspring cost £318 so I presume it was from Mercedes. They Charge £60 per hour labour and they booked me 1and a half hours to do the job which was £90 so that's not that bad.

Devilman, is your car now riding at the same height both sides?
I've had the same issue and replaced the passenger side airspring, but the drivers side is about 1.5cm higher than the passenger side (as it was pre airspring change).
I know that the nearside damper is shot (haven't checked the offside), could that be a reason for the difference?
Both ride height sensors have been replaced with genuine items also.

Hi
the car is the same height both sides. The only damage the garage found was the faulty left rear airspring which was replaced. No other faults seen or detected.
