A 4Matic saloon is an odd combination!

How does 4MATIC work? Is it a torsen differential like the Audis or a viscous coupling arrangement? Are they reliable, the early 4MATICs?

Prefer to see it as it was i.e. grubby. That way you can see if there are any nasty oil leaks...

4matic would have done me proud when it was snowing. And it would fit in my garage.

I'm not sure I'd have wanted to drive it with the salt on the roads though.

I read that it's not unusual for old 4Matics to actually only be running in 2WD as the cost of fixing a problem exceeds the value of the car.

4-Matic springs are one of the wonders of the Western World!

It takes a German engineer with Große Bälle to specify a spring with a b---i---i---i---g loop in it to allow the driveshaft to pass through!

I can imagine what might have happened if a Land-Rover engineer had come up with this solution - they'd have had a good laugh, phoned the spring foundry, had an even bigger laugh and gone down the pub. German engineers would just write out a spec and the foundry would be expected to meet it

That is one rusty W124 Bolide
