I have never heard it but the missus mentioned a low vol drivetrain whine when coming off throttle (when moving) - it only lasts for a few seconds and is definately speed related.

If pushed to guess I think It sounds like the box - anyone know if its a common SL issue and if its going to get worse and cost £££ I may cut my losses - shame cos its running perfectly at the mo and I never noticed the whine before

Any insight appreciated

Could be differential - has the oil been checked / changed? Or could also be a wheel bearing starting to go - but both unlikely unless higher miles. My rear wheel bearing started to whine at some speeds at about 180k miles - and I thought it was the diff to start with. Could also be an alternator bearing / power steering bearing? Strange how vibrations / noises travel around!

Its on 65k miles - I hope its a simple bearing and not the trans.

I will take it to an indie but dont want to pay £££ in diagnositics - how easy is it for a trained mech to suss it ?

Its probably the diff- lots of Mercs do this- if there's plenty oil in it--it will go on like this for another 100k miles.

Very easy for a time served MB mechanic - took my indi about 1 minute to diagnose the wheel bearing.
As grober says if it is the diff then change the oil, mke sure it is not leaking and leave it. It will most likely be just the same in another 100 or 200k miles.
