When putting on my spare tyre on my eclass 2001 estate 320 cdi I stupidly didnt use the shorter bolts that come with the spare wheel _ i used the longer bolts that come with the alloys.

Result has been I've tightened the bolts further than i should have done.

result is the bolts are quite hard to do up

My MB dealer says oh dear, you've used the wrong bolts and damaged the hub and will have to replace it.

however, i think if the bolts can be done up (albeit harder than normal) the wheel will still be secure and MB are just being over cautious / corporate

do you agree with this ? how much would a new front hub be ? seems like my situation isnt desirable, but doesnt really warrant a new hub....thanks for any help advice ...

o dear!! i did the same on my w202!
but i did mine on the back and ripped the foot break shoes out!

not quite sure about the front hub tho!

Re tap the threaded holes and I think you may be ok (M12, 1.5 pitch)

Not using the correct bolts, very stupid (your words you understand). Not posting in the right section, well........

When i used bolts that were too long on my old 124 , i crushed the innards , brake shoes and bits and bobs and these had to be replaced ...

Does the w210 320 have handbrake shoes inside the hub ?

Does the w210 320 have handbrake shoes inside the hub ?

W210 will do, but only on the back of course.

It's possible that as this has only happened on the front hub, all that may have happened is that the bolt has wound into the threaded part of the hub a little further than usual, and that because the final part of the thread would naturally be full of 8 years worth of brake dust/rust/dirt etc the bolt became a bit tight whilst dislodging this.

In a nutshell - winding in the bolt a little bit further than usual would be unlikely to have damaged the hub IMHO, but as Howard mentions - if you'd done this on the back, then you might have damaged/disturbed the parking brake mechanism.

My only concern would be that if the wheel bolt had been wound in so far that the threaded part had finished, and that the non-threaded part of the bolt shank could have damaged the first part of the threaded hole in the hub itself (?)

An obvious question - but what's actually damaged? Is there any damage that you can see to the threads on the hub?

Ha !! Cheers Will .... i missed the part about it being the front hub !! :o

Yes I would say simply run a tap through the thread and it should be fine.

I managed to cross thread a couple on my W123 once and I re tapped them... fine ever since, must have been 12-13 years ago now..
