its got a mercedes club member sticker in it;

how do people allow this sort of thing to happen to what was a car worth atleast a few grand when it was complete.....

he also doesnt appear to know exactly what it is.

good to get the spares/parts from it (i suspect not much but may be a few bits), but its in Kent and i'm in scotland!

Thats upsetting to see it in that state - i love those sl's infact the first car i ever drove age 14 was a bright red 86 sl (it wasn't stolen:crazy: my dad let me have a go down a country lane)

i've always said one day i will have one in the garage as a playing out car

ooh i fancy that as i really miss my old red one, not far away either as it happens, it'll have to go to the end of the queue and wait in the barn for a bit though if i get it, but i reckon i'll have a punt, wonder if the reserve is sensible?

dont know the reserve, but surly its past saving?

i'm currently restoring mine which is 95% good anyway, and to do it properly its going to cost a lot of money.

you're better off buying a running one cheap or a good one done, than to try and save that IMO. only use for parts only and i suspect most of them are past it and rusted.

look at the rot on the drivers door sill. That car is ready to scrap.

nothing is past saving if you have the will and a welder, plenty of things dont make economic sense if you have to pay someone else to restore them, but a car is only a load of metal welded up together, if it was made once it can be made again.

I have put cars back together that were given to em as wrecks before, ok i might spend as much money in the end as buying a good one, but i enjoy it, and spending a little here and little there over 2 or 3 years is the only way i can get hold of expensive cars and i at least know the car is a goodun once finished.

That SL may make a good rally replica for instance if the interior is knackered, i could sell off any parts that are good, fit a roll cage and a pair of bucket seats, spot lights and a few decals and bobs your uncle a cheap but fun and interesting car. The fact the body wasn't perfectly straight wouldnt matter so much on a rally inspired vehicle, i know the merc rally cars were SLCs but i'd still bomb about in an SL look(ish) alike

If you think ANY car is beyond saving you need to check out some of the basket case mk1 escorts that get restored and the are hardly worth a fortune.

fair enough if you enjoy it.

i'm currently restoring mine and enjoying doing it. Quite a lot of hard work but worth it for the satisfaction i'll have when its finsihed.

good luck if you go for it. i dont reckon it will go too high as there are no pics of a lot of the stuff you could part it out for.

he does say he has all the lights, bumpers etc. i bet all the chrome needs replacing though!

i am blessed with a mercedes breaker about 15 mins from my house so anything it needs i can probably find, and if it did turn out to be a rally rep then i could black paint or even leave off the bumpers (ooh i have a nice aluminium bull bar sitting in the garden) it may not be an original minty spec car for enthusiasts to gush over after i finished with it, but it would be another one back on the road and make me smile on a sunny day for a few years. :D

are you going to go for it then?

what merc breaker is near to you?

I'll have a small bid on it i reckon, i'll leave it till near the end though as it might shoot up out of my price range ayet anyway.

thanks - will probably give him a ring when i need some more bits for the SL.

I think the wheel clamp is a bit optimistic :-)

If anyone does buy it, the private plate could sell well ?...Ian

didnt meet the reserve. i emailed the seller asking what it was but he didnt reply.

i dont think it would be worth more than about £600. the amount of money it needs spending on it is astronomical and i cant imagine too many parts being salvagable from it to make a decent profit breaking it

i thought it was to dear at 500 quid, he can keep it for that money, i only paid 450 for my drivable W115 coupe and thats much rarer.

bet the neighbours are gutted he didnt sell it, i mean come on stuck in the garden for years and all that crap in the background as well, he needs a word of "encouragement" to shape up:devil:

if he gave it a quick clean out and bolted everything back on he may stand a better chance at near 1k. but in that state without any decent pics of the stuff that bolts on, which is what many would be buying it for (spares) i woudlnt want it for £500. i wonder if he will relist it
