Guys

On the off chance I wonder if anyone has or has used a Vgate "Icar" plug in OBD dongle. I have been bought one as a present and all day yesterday tried getting my Iphone 4 to pick up the wifi network that is suppose to show in my wifi networks on the phone:wallbash:. Problem I have is that I found out that the Iphone does not Bluetooth to the Icar being that Apple hold the rights on its Bluetooth technology which seemed a bit stupid being that this product is advertised as an "Icar"... a friend who has one of these confirmed that it works perfectly on Wifi and to use this to connect to the Icar dongle and my Iphone 4. I have tried everything including switching it over to my wifes car and still no wifi, I have loaded Dash Command to my Iphone and "torque" on my wifes Samsung but it doesnt make any difference either devices cannot find the Wifi network “V-Link” on my Iphone 4 or the Samsung Galaxy, so not sure what I am doing wrong if anything at all but would so much like to get this working:confused:, so any advice or help that you may be able to give me would be very very much appreciated.

Cheers
Benjy

I've had a quick look at the VGate website and it seems that they sell two versions of the iCar: one Bluetooth and one WiFi.
Do you know which one you actually have? In your post you have seemingly used WiFi and Bluetooth interchangeably and I suspect that maybe you're using the wrong interface on your 'phone.

Thanks Zulu 10,

Yes the one I have is suppose to be Wifi and Bluetooth compatiable but have been told that the one I have is the Wifi one.

It just wiont pick up the Wifi network which according to the instructions should come up once plugged into the car saying "V-LINK". But nothing. :(

If you look at the web site they are either WiFi OR Bluetooth but not both.
There's a symbol to denote which on the panel by the LEDs.
Have your tried putting your 'phone into Bluetooth 'discover' mode just before you plug in the OBD adapter?

Yes I have tried both, WIFI and Bluetooth just in case. Its definately a Wifi one that I have got.

Have you tried using a laptop or other WiFi device to see whether that can see the adapter?

Yes I tried my iPad and MacBook and both those couldn't find the network name either.

Sorry for the slow reply.
Based on what you've said, I'd strongly suspect that the adapter is u/s, but I suggest trying it (1) in another car which is not a Merc, and (2) have you tried it with the Merc ignition in position ii ?

Ah, that make me wonder... some Mercs do not follow common practise and energise Pin 8 of the OBD socket when the ignition is switched on, though there's always permanent 12V at Pin 16.

I therefore wonder whether your adapter is not being powered up?

Definitely suggest trying it in a non Merc...

Hi Zulu10,

Found the problem, turns out even though the box said Wifi on it they had sent me a Bluetooth one which doesn't work on the iPhone, so the guy is going to send me the correct dongle. A friend who has a Porsche and one of these gadgets took it home to try it and he spotted the problem after it didn't work in his car as well.

But thanks ever so much for all your help and support with my issue and appreciate all the feed back

Cheers

What software do you use? I have the bluetooth variant with Torque odb but It doesnt do a good job of finding codes. I know its nothing compared to a normal scanner

Hi

I am using DashCommand which is recommended for the iPhone. What I have seen of it, looks pretty good. Put Torque on my wife's android and yes I agree doesn't have a lot of functionality.
