Hi. I recently purchased Viano 2011 long with some issues not known to me before purchase that I will have to address (dishonest seller)
First problem is:
When driving 70mph plus there is about inch loose on steering wheel where nothing happens. Another issue is when driving at the roundabouts, or cornering the steering pulsating and pulling opposite direction.
Am I thinking correctly that steering rack is faulty?
Can someone recommend company where can I get refurbished unit.
Many thanks

Has the fluid level in the PAS rack been checked (the dipstick is moulded into the cap on the expansion tank) , has the fluid ever been replaced ? If this van has an non hydraulic or full electric steering system ignore my questions 👍

It is hydraulic for sure. Where can I find the dip stick. Is it next to the engine dip stick omn the right hand side mounted to the cap? When cold it shows bottom line, I don't know if it has been changed. Have no history of this vehicle

Hello Mario

I've not long had a viano and I'm only just up the road from you.

I used PSC Autocentre to carry out work on mine, they seemed very knowledgeable and they have an ex MB guy working for them.

Out of interest where did you get your van from? As I'd looked at a few and your wheels look familiar.

I am planning to do most work myself I just need correct diagnosis.

I got it from London.

The expansion tank is normally within eyesight and easy reach and not very big with a small screw off cap into which the dipstick is moulded, a quick look online or in the owners manual should locate it.

Power steering fluid is often overlooked and never changed but it is cheap and easy to do , certainly cheaper than taking it to a 'specialist' ...who will do exactly what you could of checked easily yourself.

If the fluid is in good condition and at the correct level then your fault lies elsewhere, but do the cheap and easy stuff first 👍

As an update. I got new power steering rack and new power steering pump fitted. What I also have is a leaking high pressure pipe that goes to the cooler. I did replace it with a second hand but now leeks on the connection with the rad. From the rubber pipe. I did cut it a bit and put 2 new clips on it and still leaks from there...... Any ideas???

Has the pump & rack cured the issue you had?? I would have started with the tyres as all V class suffer badly from Camber issues & are aweful to drive when out.

The same day I bought the van it had new tyres fitted. Steering rack cured the 3 inch gap on the steering wheel, however the pulling at the roundabout the opposite direction is not fully cured. Tracking was also done when new parts were fitted.
