viano 3.0 cdi radiator fan issues

Driving the other night ,when there was a rattle from under the bonnet . Stopped too look ,found that radiator fan was sitting inside the radiator fan cowling ,having detached or sheared itself off of ,i'm assuming the water pump as I could see no electric motor or associated bracketry. My question is simply ,is the fan attached to the water pump by a viscous coupling or does it bolt directly ,as there is a steel boss with hex flats protruding from the back of the fan . Any advice/ knowledge ,especially on reattaching appreciated ,as access does look quite tight,thanks

rad fan update

fitted new rad fan ,went in relatively easily, local MB dealer gives discount on parts depending how quickly you need them, ordered fan on 2 day delivery and got 12% off of retail price ,1 day delivery you get 5% off ,so price was £107 all instead of list . loctited fan on though,so far so good
