Viano ex long, 651 2014. S211 646 2009 (till the Gov't drones blow 'em off the road)
Following johnsco's thread on the 211 vibration, my Viano has had new mounts but has developed some vibes at tickover, more when cool.

Is the crankshaft pulley / damper a likely culprit on the 651.940 engine?

I've bought the pulley / harmonic balancer.
I expected it to be an awkward job, has anyone done this on the W639, om651?

I can't see the 4 bolts, but can get an E14 onto the heads.
The engine will rotate as I attempt to loosen, so I'm anticipating dropping a bar at the back of the pulley for it to come up against the casing and prevent rotation.

Is there an easier way that is likely to leave me with some knuckles left at the end?

Yes,
you need to lock the flywheel.
Remove the starter and use one of these,

But for that you've to remove the starter heat shield, 3x E12 bolts.
Then loosen the exhaust so the shield can come out.
The from underneath remove the starter 2x E14 bolts,
but the ATF filler tube will need to be moved some 1st, and the DP pressure switch plate wants loosening, 3 x E10 bolts.

You will still find the 4 x E14 bolts to the crank pulley are a bitch.
Working blind and keeping square to the bolts is nigh on impossible.
When ordering the locking tool order some new knuckles as you will be needing those as well.

With water pump, and so fan, and fan surround out it makes the job much easier.
Along with the carrier for the glow plug relay.

Does anyone have the tightening torque for the 4 main pulley bolts?
