Hi,
I have a 2008 Viano with the 2.2 diesel engine. It's generating excessive blue smoke after its been idling I.e. At traffic lights or in queues.
It doesn't seem to consistently happen.

Any ideas what it could be? Any help would be appreciated.

Oil leaking past the turbo seals and pooling in the exhaust? When you set off from the lights it burns off?

Does a 2008 Vito have a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)?

It's approaching 100K miles but has been regularly serviced so curious if turbo oil seal is likely cause. Is there a smart way to diagnose this?

I guess it'll depend on how accessible the turbo is, there are usually two seals, one on the inlet and another on the outlet. Whether you'd be able to visually ascertain if either are leaking by crawling under the van is one for your local garage I'd guess.

Thanks for the suggestion. Ive noticed there is black wet oily residue in the exhaust outlet but there is no oil under the van where it is parked. Are you saying a turbo leak would be visible if it can be examined externally? I thought maybe you meant there was an oil leak from the inside the turbo into the exhaust. A turbo repair sounds expensive, could it be anything simpler that I could try first?

If the oil is leaking through the turbo into the exhaust then it is unlikely you'll see this without removing the turbo.

An oily residue in the tailpipe would be another indicator of a leaky turbo.

As long as you don't have a DPF then there shouldn't be any harm in leaving it for now. As long as the engine oil level isn't dropping the only side effect is the oily haze when setting off, which could be problematic come MOT time. I think diesels are only emission tested for soot so even then it may not be an issue.

It'll only get worse, but it might be a very slowly degrading seal!

Ok thanks, I don't think I can live with it as it is, the cloud it leaves behind is quite alarming. I ve just phoned a friend who is going to investigate my model to see if there are any alternative potential causes (PCV?) before I ask the garage to have a look.

My friend got back to me and has said it could be an injector or glow plug issue, , which made me recollect that I have a glow plug warning light that comes on and goes out again that I've been ignoring for months He suggested I change glow plugs first and take it from there...his theory is when the engine temp cools down the glow plugs should come on and this helps reduce blue smoke. He has recommended keeping an eye on coolant temperature in case engine is running too cold, for example due to a thermostat issue which, coupled with faulty glow plugs, could cause the problem. I'm hoping this is the issue but I'm not normally lucky with this van so we'll see if his elaborate diagnosis is correct. ( probably the turbo!)

So need some more help please. Glow plugs not fitted but was trying out the theory that glow plugs were causing it. So kept revs high on the M62 crawl into work to keep engine temp high. Big clouds of smoke ensued so drove straight to my Mot garage. They diagnosed blown turbo. They've changed it(£900!!) but at the moment there appears to be no improvement. They say it's just oil burning off from exhaust but I can't understand whist that wouldn't be constant burn off and symptoms seem similar to before....
