I have a E300 TD (W210, 1997) - 75K miles and dispite having recently had the wheels balanced cannot get rid of wheel vibration at 50-60 mph. The tyres seem OK. Tyres are 16" - continentials.

Any ideas what might be causing this problem. My local tyre garage don't really know how to solve this one.

could be warped front brake discs
damaged ,bent wheel rims, loose wheel bearing,or weak front shocks

Its also worthwhile getting double checking the balance as your local tyre depot may have not had their balancing machine calibrated recently and you would be surprised how much out they can be out.

Given that you've just had tyres changed this sounds mighty like a balance problem. If the garage that did the tyres can't sort suggest you go elsewhere.

Have you recently replaced the tyres or rotated the wheels (at a service perhaps)?

Could be mis-shaped tyre - don't laugh I have seen a tyre come off a car that is not perfectly round anymore!

Balancing?

Component of Steering Rack?

That's Tyre Calibration problem. Get your tyres calibrated <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> the vibration will go away <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> that happened to me too

Thanks for the replies so far.

I had the tyres balances twice but this didn't sort out the problem.

One thing I forgot to mention is that when I apply the brakes at 50-60 mph, the steering wheel shudders. Does this give anymore clues ?

I may get the alignment checked as well and rotated the tyres.

as i said before, the fact that you get juddering at 50mph while braking-highly suggestive of warped front brake discs or bent rim <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> -check them out
