After 4 or 5 tries Windows Update eventually intalled SP1
It reckons to be a successful install in the update history

I now get a message "Windows modules installer stopped working and was closed"

Also, when I check for any updates I get an error message 80080005 "Windows could not search for updates"

I'm not big on this stuff so any help / advice would be greatly appreciated

    Many thanks

    Mike

As I know to my cost Vista, especially the 64 bit version, is the work of the Devil.

Easy things first: restart computer and try again.

More difficult: read this, taking gloomy note of the "issues related to Windows Vista® Service Pack 1 (SP1), along with instructions for working around them"

    Update

Well, I've done a system restore to before SP1 and magically the problems have gone away!

Was it a crap install of SP1 and I ought to try it again - or just leave well alone?

    Comments please?

    Thanks chaps

Still got any pending updates that pre-date Vista SP1?

Although I have tried to forget the experience, one of the issues at the time was that SP1 did not take unless some other update was in place first.

No, I did a completely clean re-install a few weeks back and have been getting daily updates ever since. It's tried to re-install SPi a few minutes ago and it failed.

Now I have problems with outlook in that it won't save the ISP password

I installed SP1 when it first came out months ago and regretted it!! I took it off in the end and it runs much better without it!! I like Vista - but SP1 is the spawn of the devil!!

The whole Vista experience has been a pain!

XP just worked fine all the time - my old PC went phut so I bought a new Dell that came loaded with Vista.

    Ho-hum!

I thought you got Vista SP1 through Microsoft Update if your system needs it anyway, so I don't see why you're having to install it manually.

We run a number of labs at work on Vista SP1 (Enterprise, not home), and have absolutely no problem with it. In fact a lot of things we do are just broken without the SP applied.

    SP1 is via Windows Update
On the log it shows several attempts and 1 successful install, it is after the SP1 install that the problems began.

I have never had any issues installing SP1 and it really does improve the performance.

Compromising image? don't tell people you have a Dell... ;)

Download and run vista4experts and get rid of the annoying automatic functions and other stuff you'd rather control.
