I have a Vito 05 115 CDI - gearbox P/n A6392701100

Recently had gearbox issues getting stuck in 3rd and then stuck in 1st. The error codes show the 3rd RPM sensor failed.

Took it to a gearbox specialist who say there is metal in the oil, also the oil is slightly burnt. They are suggesting a complete rebuild for £2000.

I want to try and keep the van on the road for another 2 years. So here are few questions for you

a - Is it as bad as it sounds?

b - Anyone got a gearbox out there for a fair price?

c - Is there an compatible gearboxes for this van other than the part Merc say it is, I have been offered a few box with different part numbers but can not tell if they would fit other than the person word it will.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

I'm guessing this is an auto?

A gearbox specialist should know better than I, but how much metal and how did they arrive at that conclusion? There is usually metal particles in the sump, that are caught by the magnet.

A burnt smell isn't unusual, obviously not ideal. But how long / how many miles has the oil done?

Others will know better but I would assume the 'RPM sensor is part of the gearbox solenoid plate. If so they aren't a scary price, especially if changed during an ATF service.

But as said since they have the diagnostics to read these codes the chances are they are talking with good experience.
