vito
Hi Everyone
Looking for a bit of advice, I have a 'x' reg vito 108cdi. I have not owned that long so not sure if the speed and power I am receving is normal. I feel that I am not getting the power i thought I would from the van in running up through the gears you dont seem to get that ummp like you do from transits and vw etc. Revs are fine as in goes up to around 3500-4000 in all gears but top speed on flat is around 75-80 max takes a while to get there and if you hit a hill you can drop to 40 - 50 (and i dont mean everest). I thought being a 2.2 turbo I would have a bit more power. It did go into limp mode once and I found a vac pipe to a sensor on the bulkhead behind the inlet manifold loss, pushed back in and came out of limp mode( paid a garage £75 not to find that). Any help or info would be great as do use van daily now.

It is the lowest rating for the engine but we had no complaints about the 109 we had although it did do better than the figures you quote. 95 was the top speed and I thought it drove quite well. What's the mileage and has it had a recent check-up?

Had it checked out on merc star machine and after i picked it up was in limp mode, so i sorted by finding this vac pipe. Mileage is 145k. But i still think it should be faster then 45 mph up incline on the dual carriage way

Gonna check them today. You can hear the turbo come in around 2500 revs but you can't feel it.

Ok had a mechanic at work have a quick look today and he said the waste gate is staying open, might this be the reason I am having no boost and runs like a non turbo. What valve controls the waste gate.

Not sure on the vito, but from the age of it i'd say it was vacuum operated, there will be a pipe that comes out of the wastegate and goes to a solenoid valve, called a boost control solenoid or BCS. it could either be this which is faulty allowing the vacuum through all the time or the wastegate itself is faulty

Ok gonna take the van in on Monday to try and get some one to finally sort if not gonna get rid. If anyone out there has a 108 cdi like mine please can they tell me what sort of performance they get. I would like to know before i go wasting anymore money trying to achieve something that might be unachievable. It feels like there is no turbo and drives like a na engine. Max speed on flat is 75 ish but as stated any incline and it will drop to around 50 ish need to drop down the gears and feels like i am reving the t**s out of it. Sorry to go on but as I have lost my company car this is my only form of transport for work and leisure.

I'd always advise patience on forums because the people who know most (or anything) might not be on or might miss ur post etc. Anyway here are some suggestions. When it was in limp mode what was the fault code stored ? Can you post a pic of the sensor with the vac pipe removed.

I should have been clearer sorry, my engine is the same as the 108cdi. I had a 2.4 turbo transit for years and i would say the power is quite similar to the 108. I would not say that i can feel the turbo come in. I can hear it. I feel that is does accelerate like a NA car but a fast enough and responsive enough. It should have plenty of power to get up hills.

So has it been serviced ? Check especially for the air filter, remove it even and see if it drives better. Change the fuel filter too. And oil and make sure correct oil is used.

When you say the wastegate is open always. Is that with the engine running ? If u look carefully you should be able to follow the hose to where it goes. Check the hoses from intercooler look for holes and listen. Check for injector leaks by listening carefully. I always get a bad smell inside when i stop start the car when warm, thats if my injectors are leaking. You could also remove the top engine cover and look around the injectors for black tar which would indicate leaky injectors. Not really any way other than get ur hands dirty and start looking. Theres no MAF sensor either so dont bother looking for one

Boost pressure vacuum control is behind the engine at drivers side behind the alternator mounted on the body of the car. I think the wastegate pipe goes there. Interesting that the Merc suggests testing the vacuum unit when power is low. Maybe you should be looking for vacuum leaks all around. Boost pressure sensor is mounted just above the air filter box screwed onto the body. it has a small pipe on it and a plug. Make sure its connected. Also make sure all ur dash lights work please at ignition on. Especially the fault idicators

What do revs max out at without load ? Is it possible ur clutch is slipping ? Any smell out of it ?

Hey Danny thanks for the replys. You not what is like when it gets frustrating. I think the mechnic at work was just trying to pass off. - He is more a fitter anyway. Ok I have changed the fuel filter already and serviced. when it went into a merc specialist they found some faulst to do with fuel rail and resisatnce across the glow plugs. All faults cleared apart from glow plug resistance. When I collected and paid driving home went in to limp mode so I messed around at home and found a sensor on the bulk head with two vac pipes in the top and a cone shaped filter on the bottom. This pipe had come lose on the top so pushed back to gether and came out of limp. ie i could rev over 3000 rpm and headlamp adjusters worked again. Under no load will rev out to over 4000. Has had injector seals done before I brought it. Like i say might be expecting to much but my cousins 2.5tdi t4 88bhp P****s all over mine.

4000 rpm sounds a bit low to me, i think it should hit at least 4800 rpm. You dont have a mat under the acc pedal do you ? Look carefully at the pedal for full travel. I will try check my REV limit later. I think mine is limited revs while driving due to auto box but 4k sounds low. Any smoke from exhaust ?

When stationary it will rev to just over 4500 and a small puff of smoke when you release the accel pedal. And I have checked no mat under pedal.

What would be a good way to check, diconnect the cat drive up the road and see what it goes like - i know it will be noisey but ???

i really hope is that easy to fix, but i know my luck - if it wasnt for bad luck i wouldnt ahve any

You'll have to stick at it and rule things out as you go.
