Hi there, I'm a newbie on here, & I wonder if anyone on here is able to advise me.?
I have recently purchased a 2001 Vito 110cdi with 111k on the clock.
It has a "bit of a rattle", and I'm struggling to diagnose it.
I've posted up a little video on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/v/TxEgqy-1T54

Hard to tell without hearing it in person, but possibly and injector seal which would be easy to diagnose as you'd hear it coming from the rocker.

But could be something sinister, has it had regular oil changes? Hs it ran low on oil?

Sounds like a knocking big end from video.

Thanks for the input Maz.:thumb:

:confused:It's no easier to identify standing with the engine either.!

Sadly I don't know the history, but she seems sadly unloved so I can fear the worst I guess.

I'm currently thinking maybe a sticking hydraulic follower ???

I know I'm going to have to start stripping her:(, but it would be good to have some suggested directions to start to look in.

I've had this lately with 2 diesel engines, hard to diagnose knocking followed by 1) Con rod through engine block, 2) we decided to strip it to fault the crank and one of the big end bearings badly scored.

A sticking hydraulic follower wouldn't be as loud as this, but its easier to whip the rocker off than to take big end shells off!

Ok, thanks again Maz.

If I assume that it is a big end, then presumably I'll have to strip the head off to remove the conrods ? (I'm assuming that they'll pull out of the top of the block.??)

Do you (or anyone) know if I'm getting myself into an "engine out" job, or if the crankshaft & conrods can be accessed with the block in situ.?

I don't want a "Con rod through engine block", so strip it to find the fault is sounding more & more necessary.:(

:dk:Any advice, anyone.??

Any MB talented mechanics want to comment ?? ( Pleeeaase ! :o )

It sounds Very like the hydraulic tappit. A little louder than mine but not much. Your engine sounds very quiet with the intake manifold off compared to mine especially when you rev it.My hydraulic tappit is very noisy sometimes, then after a bit goes quiet. I ignore it because it comes and goes. If it comes and goes then assume its a tappit. My oil change seems to make no difference. Also i use Bardahl STOP SMOKE to control smoky exhaust. But still if its hot or cold inside or outside i often hear tap tapping but usually it goes away of it's own accord. If u want i can look or listen to mine etc. V220 CDI 2.2 turbo diesel. I have noisy tappits and leaky injector right now and noisy drive shaft.

Interestingly my local Merc Indi has had two cases recently of the bolts holding the big end caps undoing themselves....one on a 220cdi and the other on a 320cdi engine. The one on the 220 had lost one bolt and was only being held in place by the other bolt, which had nearly unravelled.. the 320 had lost both bolts.

Big end bearings are accessible without removing the crank on most cars, not sure what the 220 engine is like as I've never had to remove a sump on one.

Best bet is to take it to a local Indy and have the fault correctly diagnosed, because if its needing any work to the crank it's labour intensive and expensive.

If its top end it's likely to be a lot cheaper.

On the grounds that it may be the big end bearings at fault, I would expect the oil pressure to be very low.

Unfortunately I didn't even get a users handbook with my Vito. :wallbash:

There doesn't even seem to be the usual oil pressure light (that on most vehicles would be lit until the engine starts, and then would remain off unless the pressure dropped off)

Is this oil pressure warning light not present on the Vito vans please ???

If it was just one bearing it wouldn't really make a huge difference to oil pressure, I would get it to a garage ASAP.

.... i'm sure yours is better

I'm pretty sure it's not better mate, but thanks for the thought.! :)

Are there not any "Diehard Vito lovers" on this forum, keen to defend their beloved vehicle.???? (& offer me their much needed knowledgeable advice  , please ).

Oil pressure light is 7 from the left. To the left of the battery light. I heard my clicking this morning so i thought 'good time to record it' when i played it back i could not hear it ! Only engine noise. I could still hear it myself really loud , just not on the recording..i guess urs is a lot louder. I can look n listen if you need reference or whatever

Thanks for that DDV, I will have a look at my dash lights now & try to figure out the oil pressure warning light based on that information.

:p Bump
