Vito 110cdi tapping sound

Be patient, its quiet on here at weekends, or else the person who has your answer is not always around i find, sometimes you need to go try some stuff and come back post again and then maybe the right person spots it.....sometimes i feel so ignored....:(

Thanks again DDV, I'll try to be more patient.! :o

Could be an injector knocking, place a stethoscope (or long screwdriver) on each injector to test for sound.

Ok, so I tried listening to the engine from all points with my newly acquired mechanic's stethoscope, and I still can't locate the origin with any certainty.:(

So I would like to start with the Big End Bearings, and whilst I'm there I can see if there are any clues lying in the bottom of the Pan.

So I have removed the intercooler pipe & coolant pipes that run under the sump.
Next I removed all the bolts to remove the sump, but I find that the sump can not be removed as there is insufficient clearance between it & the front offside subframe. :wallbash:

Please does anyone know how I can remove the sump, surely you don't have to lift the engine out just to remove the sump tray ??

Help, please....

You might get enough clearance to remove the sump by releasing the engine mounting bolts and using a hoist to raise the engine slightly.

It seems the subframe has to be removed, incl drive shafts wish bones steering rack etc etc etc. A lot of work there. Thats from WIS

Drat.
That is just how it looked like to me this evening, as I was struggling to remove it in situ'.

I was really hoping I was wrong.

In which case I suspect this is going to take me a little longer than I'd hoped.

What is "WIS" please ???

That sounds like something I could really use right now.

I don't suppose you are you able to point me in the right direction for a download DDV.?

Try torrentz.eu search wis/epc take your pic from options there and try one. I see a new one there a virtual machine preinstall looks good. or "mercedes benz wis" its a torrent so u need bitlord and peerguardian2 or similar. Its also very slow. Or else just buy from ebay

Hi there, I'm a newbie on here, & I wonder if anyone on here is able to advise me.?
I have recently purchased a 2001 Vito 110cdi with 111k on the clock.
It has a "bit of a rattle", and I'm struggling to diagnose it.
I've posted up a little video on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/v/TxEgqy-1T54

That noise is the piston hitting the bore at the top of the stroke
aka
Piston slap.

Its not the bearings but the piston its self tapping the cylinder wall.

You may find the bearings are ok but the piston will have scrapped the bore.

Sometimes it can be really noisy when cold but as the engine warms up it gets a little quieter as the piston expands in the bore.

I'm currently looking for a short engine (block only) after this happened again recently, still perfectly driveable but has a noisy tap tap tap :)

Typical damage caused by ingesting a swirl flap.(not my image but damage is the same)

You would appear to be exactly right E270 owner.

Having removed the sump, & whilst inspected the visible components, I discovered that the bore of (No 4 ? -closest to the gearbox) appears to be scored.

All the other cylinders appear perfect.
I presume that it could be piston slap from that cylinder ??
It looks to a machined block design, not a sleeved bore, so......:(:(:(

Without boring the knickers off ya :)

The bores were originally Alusil design so they were honed and polished with felt/senna pads and a special silca compound that coats the bores.
Special rings are/were used on these bores.

A lot of engineering shops simply hone the bores and replace the rings with carbon ones so the process is cheaper.

So

A second hand engine would be a cheaper option than splitting the head and replacing/repairing the bottom end,
once gasket sets etc etc are taken into consideration.

Remove the swirl flaps and do the modification to block the holes in the inlet manifold when replacing it, you don't want to ingest another flap :(

Of course if you can live with the noise, the engine will/should carry on for many thousands of miles like this :)

So, no easy resolve on this one then.:wallbash:

3x options, advice please.:

  • Stripping out back to the bare block & taking that to an engineering shop for attention + attention.

  • Locate a replacement engine, I have been told of one from a 108cdi, is this essentially the same base components ? )

  • Put everything back & put up with the noise, until something eventually fails

  • Put everything back & sell it as "spares or repairs" yet with 12 months MOT.!

Any observations gratefully received guys.

Above written while you were editing yours E270 owner LOL.
