Hi, I am looking at replacing the current 16" wheels.
What is the largest I can install without having to replace springs etc..
Has anybody installed 19"x8.5s?

thanks

i fitted 20 inch wheels think they are 8.5. its the tyres which make the difference ive found. i first had 245/35/20's on but they were too small. then i fitted 275/35/20 but the front were just a bit too big as the rubbed on inner plastic. changed them to 255/35/20.....just right. oh dont forget, these arnt cheap tyres. new ones are about 250 each! my next set are to be 285/35/20 on rear and sticking with 255/35/20 on front. hope this helps.:dk:

wow what is the ride like? must be really harsh. did u change the springs/struts?

As fitted on a Brabus sportX think they are 19" I have the brochure somewhere.

didnt change a thing. i always carry a heavy load so it looks lower than the average vito. and as the wheels/tyres are slightly bigger they fill the arches better. i think the ride is better, but having just taken a chunk out of a tyre and rim:mad: by hitting a curb, ive now got to get them refurbed. only downside with big rims on work vans.

this is with the smaller 245/35/20 tyres.
if i can find a pic of it with 275/35/20 on then ill post it, as it makes a big difference.

STUNNING !!!!!

Do you need special van wheels , being that vans generally have a higher payload capacity than cars ?

If you put 'car' wheels on a van , would they be strong enough and not start to crack / bend , even more so with the ultra low profile tyres you will need to put on ?

Undoubtedly the Brabus ones are up to the job because they are designed for the van conversion , but i'd be wary of putting aftermarket wheels on that are constructed with cars in mind ( ie. max of 4 people and a bit of luggage , not a van full of tools / cement etc )

Have you got those wheels declared on your insurance? If so, how much did it affect the premium?

totally! another thing is you wont be insured if you have an accident if they are not van spec.
i asked alot of places about van wheels and tyre loads and these seem to come up trumps. theres alot more on offer for the van driver these days. as long as you do your research you shouldnt have any probs.

yer i declared them but doesnt seem to matter as if i get them stolen or damaged they will only replace them with standard steel wheels? dont even think they affected the price, maybe 50 pound or so? maybe its just my insurance company? got me thinking now, lol.

The insurance on our Vito is up for renewal in a couple of weeks and I was going to ask then what effect non-standard wheels would have. We are with CIS at the moment.

I would like to put AMG IIs on ... probably stick with 17" though as the tyre size is the same as the factory 17" 6-spokes we have currently.

im also with the CIS, i might ring them later and find out a bit more. ill let you know.

Milky what PSI do you put in your tyres?
Do u still stick to the same specs by Merc for 16" wheels?

I think im running at around 42. Did have one running at 49! for a while. Soon wore out the middle.(thanks to a garage!) I just look at the wear on the tyres... not a lot more you can do as all low profiles have different max psi. i would go about 2 psi more than the 16...not much help i know.

oops! Just spoke to CIS.. they dont cover any modifications, alloy wheels which are different from standard. said to them that ill have to move to a different company and they just said...ok. cant believe ive been driving around for past year and a half not fully insured.

Thanks, I had a nasty feeling they'd say that.

CIS were WAY cheapest for our Vito 120 ... I suspect most companies don't believe that a van will be used for social, domestic & pleasure only.
