For the past fortnight I can’t shake these voices in my head telling me to buy a W126. This came to a head when I saw not one, not two but three all this morning (given, there could be a W126 meet on in South Yorkshire).

I’ve not got enough hours in the day with how busy we are at work but I’ve got this overwhelming urge to go and buy one even if it’s just to plonk it on the drive and sit in it now and again.

I think this all stems from the one I bought from Mr Morgan, I never gave it the time it deserved and promptly sold it.

I’ve also got my eldest lad now at me because he was with me this morning when we saw those three and he thinks they’re very cool (or “sick” to use the parlance of the youth today)

Was Oscar Wilde right? “The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself, with desire for what its monstrous laws have made monstrous and unlawful.”

It is a worrying sign of creeping maturity :)

My uncle up in Newcastle owned one in the 1980’s, I think that’s partly where the obsession began...

If you’ve got the space to keep it & the funds then do it Lee! Remember to post pics

Didn’t realise they did a 380, was it a V8?

Love it though Gav, don’t be shy posting more pictures too.

The 3.8 was a further iteration of a single cam V8 engine series stretching back to the mid sixties. Its fitment in the W126 was the first time an alloy block in the V8 was used instead of cast iron. Unfortunately the early ones used a single row timing chain which tended to go wrong till it was improved with a double chain around 1984. The W126 originally came with the 2.8 straight six M110 or the 3.8litre M116 or 5 litre M 117 all were fuel injected.

The 380 wasn't loved in the press, My Dad had a Thistle Green one which he had for years and it never gave any trouble, My Ivory 380 i covered 3,500 miles with again never had any issues, but the mileage was extremely low. It was a Dubai Embassy Car complete with Telephone etc, everything was working and completely like new. Alas i've not got many pictures of it at all as it was before smart phones etc.

I had a 420se which had been clocked at some point mileage was unknown, the body wasn't the greatest but the engine was spot on and very powerfull for the time.

If you can get a 500 in a lovely body that would be my pick of the bunch, but i wouldn't turn down a immaculate 380 but perhaps ive just been lucky?
Nor have i had a 560 powered one either.

The SEL really does suit the car, we did find the se a little short on rear leg room for the size of car, It's not cramped but after a SEL that little extra really does make a difference.

They must be getting hard to find in good condition,

Rust areas
Top Drag link forward of scuttle inner front wings,
Bottom Forward chassis Rails,
Corner of front wings
Jacking points
Ends of Sill's
Base of Rear Windscreen
Corners of Rear wings were the Sunroof channel exits, Bubbles up rear of rear wheel
Inner Rear wheel arch forward and rear inner.
Top's of the doors behind the thick Rubber insulation, and around the sunroof
Alloy corrosion on the Bonnet and boot of the SEC ones to usually around the badges.
Bottom of doors
The Rubber blocks which mount the front bumper to the ends of the chassis rails swell and split, that causes the front bumper to drop slightly and sit uneven.

Thats all from memory but it was years ago when i had them.

I do understand this "urge".

I quite fancy one as well and similarly a W140 S500...

I have voices in my head too, but I ignore them...

And keep on killing.
