Sadly my experience and that of my Volvo owning neighbours. One was quoted £4000 for "essential" work and after having the local Bosch garage check, came away with a bill for £800 and advice that a further £600 worth may need doing in the next two years.

Mines never seen the inside of a Volvo workshop for that very reason

I think Citroen would, unless they've dramatically changed things in the past couple of months Citroens are just Peugeots in trendy trousers :)

But yeah, Peugeot has been going downhill since the late 90s; my other half's nearly new 2008 (aka C4 Cactus without the plastic bits) is at best 'ordinary'. About the only good things you can say about it are it's pretty economical on the diesel, and the rear seats are easy to fold down. Yawn!

Edit: Wouldn't touch a Citroen again though - their lousy dealers have killed two of my Citroens in the past because their servicing is dangerously shoddy (e.g. they forgot to do up the driveshaft bolts after changing a cv joint gaiter) and head office in Slough always comes out on the side of the dealer so it's not worth raising a complaint; better to avoid them altogether if you value your life.

That just smacks of apprentices doing the work.

How can Citroen defend that?

The dealer claimed I could have undone the bolts myself since I sent in pictures of the loose driveshaft (and the big hole in the gearbox caused when the driveshaft came loose), even though I'd only just driven the car home at 70 mph from the dealers. After several weeks deliberation (in which time I'd scrapped the car since it wasn't economical to repair) Slough came down on the side of the dealers since there was no way to prove I hadn't deliberately wrecked my own car and tried to kill myself :p

Ironically the dealer has since been closed down, and Citroen have now given the franchise to a very dodgy-looking tyre & exhaust place which you wouldn't even trust to do your tyre balancing, let alone service your lovely new Citroen :D

That's appalling, did you go any higher?

Citroen UK head office was the highest I could go without taking legal action, and TBH it wasn't worth the bother since the car was worth under £1000 thanks to hefty depreciation.

'Tis a shame though, Citroen have produced some fantastic cars over the years (Traction, original DS, SM, GS Birotor, CX GTi Turbo, Xsara VTS, Xantia Activa) but it appears they'd give a franchise to almost anyone with a spanner and a greasy overall, which can't help their 40-year-old UK reputation for unreliability one little bit...

BTW that wasn't the first time Citroen dealers killed one of my cars - I had a CX GTi for a while but a high pressure hydraulic pipe mysteriously split a day after it had a suspension sphere replaced by a dealer, leaving it stranded like a beached whale on a speedbump. Since it'd have needed extremely expensive specialist recovery I got a local scrapyard to turn up in a lorry with a big claw on the back to collect it, cursing the dealer for (at the very least) not spotting the hydraulic pipe was spurting fluid out like a fountain...

I've had my Volvo XC 60 for a year and a half now an absolutely love it. Just come back from a 1800 mile trip to Italy via the Simplon pass and I've had no problems at all. Now on 16500 miles with one free service and one scheduled. Nothing needed except standard service items and even had a free safety check before going to Italy.
The 8 speed auto box is so smooth, I never feel the changes except when really hoofing it.
