Not sure about the Phaeton, but a lot of the VAG stuff is around 2 years/20k miles. It's actually 24k between 7k and 31k so not drastic.

Maybe the interval is dependant on useage/oil condition too? Or a delay at the dealer for booking in. Wouldn't worry me too much if the rest of the car checked out :)

Apparently these cars are well engineered, in fact the only draw back was the badge itself and why they built a car that competed with the A8 made my VAG anyway?

I know they had a stonker of a Diesel engine, a 5.0 V10 as an option, would have loved to get my hands on one of them!!!

I think they look great and definitely has road presence, a guy in the next street to me has one and it's definitely long.

I have an Audi A6 Avant 3.0 tdi Quattro Le Mans

According to Audi/VW (same thing) it's 20k miles. However if you speak to Vag forum members leaving the oil changes to 20k can lead to timing chain rattles and issues. That said the car works out when it needs a service based on driving style and usage I'm guessing if you spend all day on the motorway then you could probably get away with every 20k however my wife takes mine a few miles a day

Mine has been serviced every 10k since I have had it. 105k 115k and 125k now on 128k

Had to replace 3 of the 6 injectors other 3 due to be replaced in Jan, Egr valve and other bits! All in all 5k In 21 months of motoring, increasing to 6k is when I have the other 3 injectors done

Great cars but prone to probs, and expensive to run.

Would have looked at newer lower mileage car if I knew then what I know now.

Hope this is useful

Very well engineered. Apparently another one of those VW projects where the end result was more important than the cost of R & D and production costs. Veyron anyone?

They also managed to throw the W12 engine in a few of them. This would be the one I'd be after, I love projects like that. No sense or logic but what a car. :D

Just like a big Passat really, blend into the background but with all the comforts of a luxury car.

New set of tyres as well..........Barum Bravarius........hmmmm, well at least you know you will have to budget for a new set of tyres upon purchase. :D

Didn't almost every one of those grenade themselves? I stumbled across a post on an American forum where an owner reckoned his had $20,000 of warranty work in 2 yrs.

Long oil change intervals would worry me, especially as the 3.0 has a timing chain fitted to the back of the engine that then stretches due to infrequent oil changes....engine out job to repair it.

I've run a twin turbo 5 litre V10 Phaeton for well over a year now.
It is a superb luxo-barge and with the V10 you have massive torque about 1000Nm achievable with a sensible map at just over tick-over. I've headed up a chat on Pistonheads about them because they are, if bought carefully a steal secondhand.
Mine cost £10K its the LWB with four individual seats that cool and massage you, double glazed, superb stereo etc etc.
Some did have problems but some have done starship mileages (250K) without a murmur.
I bought it as a University Taxi and the 400 mile round trip to Norwich was nothing in fact the journey up was like a trip to the shops. Add in 4 wheel drive, active air suspension it is a fantastic car and will only be replaced with a V8 CL63 if it ever goes pop.
Many people on Pistonheads have followed my advice and bought one and are more than happy.
Like the SL63 its a car I can't find a decent replacement for (apart from the CL63 in V8 guise)
It is exactly the same running gear as the Bentley Flying Spur all the controls are the same just a bit more bling and of course 5 times the price.

The long intervals spoken of are the Vw 'Longlife' schedules.

They actually renamed them to 'Flexible' as people were literally stretching them out as long as possible, thus abusing the point.

The 'Longlife' oil is normally quantum LL3 5W30, with the normal lube being platinum 5W40. Essentially, longlife should only be specified for people doing 18k or so per year (stretch to 20k in some cases), and is only suitable for cars which have the appropriate sensors in the sump to accurately judge the level of protection the oil offers - they've been in most VWs for years, mind.

The biggest problem I saw was tight-****d numpties doing shopping journeys but "demanded" the LongLife schedule so they could go 2 years between oil changes (roll eyes). I'm led to believe that the chemical composition of the longlife oil is suited to journeys whereby the engine speed is relatively constant, with minimal variation in operating temperature and any low-mpg scenarios (i.e. constant heavy acceleration, which can contaminate oil from PCV, carbon getting past rings and so on). Any variation from the use would render the LL schedule unsuitable and could cause chemical instability in the additives, leaving the possibility of an acidic oil that could damage bearing surfaces and so on. The 5W40 was designed for normal folk doing 8k a year, but they didn't want it due to above tightarse mentality that non-enthusiast VW owners had towards their vehicles.

Anywho, they renamed it to "Flexible" to reduce the amount of whinging people did if the service light for the oil came on after 5k miles of city driving. VW Service Schedules are incredibly convoluted though, and looking through the S/H of most cars I saw I very rarely saw anyone whose car had actually been serviced as intended, with most service managers too ignorant to accept they didn't understand how it worked.

Used to have lots of Phaeton owners refuse to have the Pollen filter changed because they are £70. The Phaeton is essentially a Bentley Continental behind the badge.

I'd buy a W12 to scratch an itch...3 quarters of a Veyron engine right?

There is no turbo on the Phaeton W12 but it does have plenty of oomph though.

Always liked them.
If I recall correctly, the alternator change in the w12 is an engine-out job !!

Yes and a water pump change takes 40 hours and there is a special cradle required for the engine.
Basically you have to hope that nothing goes wrong or if it does have a bloody good independent specialist around your area.
But for the money there are very few cars that waft along like these cars, I get 35 MPG out of mine on a run to Norwich which isn't bad for a 5 litre V10 diesel.
I have changed the words around on the back of mine to read Phat One which does raise the odd smile from the car behind.

I'd love a V10 Diesel one, very very rare here though.

Always fancied a W12 one of these for work but the bills horrify me! Lol

I agree the V10 is the same, you have to have the mindset that because you are buying them for very little money you may have to literally throw it away if something goes wrong that will lead to big bills.
One saving grace is that they are worth more in parts than a whole car.
There have been 2 2010 late series W12's for sale recently for £15-20K needless to say they both sold in a matter of days so someone knows a bargain when they see it.
