VW's CLS Clone - PASSAT Coupe

Hate that tan coloured interior.........but the idea of having a commode in the middle of the rear seat is a good idea for long distance travel.

G. try, despite the oversized VW emblem - of which the MB is also guilty. It'll be interesting to see the Skoda and Seat versions.

And with the Passat CC at the end of five years you'd have the luxury of a rust-free car with original suspension. Err.... did I just say that out loud?:D :(

:)

..although that makes it impossible to seat 5, which is a big complaint on the CLS too.

Not so. Passengers could just keep swapping around for a non stop journey. Would only work in the diesels though..

I've had a couple of VW's and they've always been exceptionally reliable. This looks pretty damn good to me, if they get the pricing right it shoud sell.

It's still a down market badge compared to the big three - BMW, Audi, and Mercedes.

Passat = Rep Mobile.. No matter what they do it!

Exactly what I meant at the start! Although VW's make excelent, well built cars they are in the same crowd as Ford, Vauxhall etc.

Exactly the problem with the Phaeton, amazing looking, well built car, but from the company that produces the Fox & Lupo :(

Sorry, not a patch on the CLS.

Also I have never met a fast Passat yet.

Alas Brian, they think they are fast...

The 2.0 TDI has 140BHP you know!

Takes a bit of kick down and my extra 10 horses to see them off, when they sit up my rear end on the Motorway...

I call it "Passatitude" or "Look at me, my Company can't afford to give me an Audi so I have a chip on my shoulder.. So I'll try and shift you by bullying you out of the way.."

Passat drivers - knobbers the lot! :)

....and the company whose other divisions make the Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborgini, Audi A8 and R8; and if Ferdinand Piech has his way, Porsche too. Meanwhile, Mercedes slides out of its folie à deux with Chrysler, the company that makes its money selling giant auto-tat to middle America. And what are all those bizarre-looking toys littering Mercedes showrooms - not Smarties, surely? I love the little 4Four but why oh why did Mercedes?

Frankly, badge snobbery is not quite what it used to be...;)

As Birdman has pointed out, who makes Smart cars, as well as A-classes, vans, trucks etc? And at least a Lupo or Fox has a reasonable chance of making 50K miles without an engine rebuild! :o

I'm sorry but Volkswagen have a pretty good brand image on these shores, whether you like it or not - and most people would put Volkswagen above Ford and Vauxhall as far as desirabilty goes.

I have never met a fast Passat yet.

Some of the larger engine varients are quite quick - I'd say that the ~300bhp, 4WD CC model will be pretty useful when it comes out ;)

Are they?

The Passat W8 wasn't slow, and the Passat R36 will be a stormer.

Going back a few generations, the Passat GT was a nice quick tool, but rusted so quickly - due to the plastic cladding along the sides I would imagine.

I agree with the above they do have a good image, but! they are no longer a 'premium' brand ;) are they? unlike Audi BMW & Mercedes people buy a Golf/Polo instead of a Focus for example.

Smarts are not called Mercedes though are they? :) - I do get what you mean though.

Depends where you are though - did you see the recent article about German Gereral's staff cars being downgraded from P4 to P3?
P4 = Audi A4 or Passat. P3 = BMW 3 Series.

Personally I don't think Passat is in the same league as C Class, A4 or 3 Series.

I do agree with you, but personally I don't think an A4 is in the same league as a Mercedes-Benz (;) ) 'C' class or a BMW 3-series.

I'd say that an A4 and a Passat are more comparible, after all, they do/did share a heck of a lot of parts :)

Maybe the A4 is more comparible in terms of prestige to something like a Lexus IS, or a Volvo?

Comparisons are all very well - and we all do it.

However - at the end of the day - we all buy the car we like the LOOK of the most - almost despite the badge at the front.
I say almost, because I do actually quite like the look of one of the Skoda cars - but I could NEVER EVER see myself buying one. Its just too much - too quickly. I can still recall the rear engined horrors that rusted away before your very eyes. I still think of Skodas alongside such quality marques as Wartburg, Yugo and Ladas.

No chance, the design is different enough. It's clearly been inspired by the CLS, but no copyright infringement. Uh oh... I think I prefer the front of the VW

I also prefer the rear of the VW to the CLS, both cars have made the same mistake they are both big but are only 4 seaters, rules me out with the grandkid.

When I first saw the photo in AutoExpress I thought it was a new Mercedes. I find it very sad to see VW stooping so low. A long and distinguished design record of their own and no need to plagiarise.
