Mercedes C Class 200K Coupe
Hi all,

I hope someone is able to help. I have an 2001 C200K coupe Auto. It is stuck in W mode. I know pretty much nothing about cars with this being my first car. This is also my first post so be gentle on me if I say anything stupid please :D

I have seen dieselmans post on this subject however my gearbox seems different and I have a button instead of a switch. I've taken the gearbox strip off that is above the white electrical looking strip and cleaned out the underneath but it hasn't changed anything. Not sure if there is more I could do here as the gearbox looks quite different to the one in Dieselmans pictures.

The dash has the W symbol and it definitely starts in second. I can use the manual function by flicking left and right on the gear stick and this works fine.

The car is pretty nippy anyway but I'm curious to how much it differs in S mode. It's been stuck in W mode since I brought it.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

A separate issue being my remote locking doesn't work. I know it isn't the batteries as I have changed these for new batteries in both of my sets of keys. I've also used a camera to check that both sets of keys are working. Central locking works remote locking doesn't. This is actually more annoying than my W/S problem as you can imagine. Any ideas on what might be wrong and how I might go about fixing the problem?

You might get a better response if you posted this in a seperate thread:thumb:

Hi, You need to get to a Mercedes dealer or independent workshop that has 'Star' this is a dedicated computer system that will determine any faults. The staff will also have the knowledge to interpret the readings. Hope this helps, and welcome to the Forum

I have a fault code reader which I brought off amazon, this doesn't return any faults. Is the star Mercedes specific? Will it bring up other faults with the car that the reader I have doesn't?

You can strip the Tip shift selector down in a similar fashion to the regular selector covered in my thread.
The problem is a very similar issue.

Hi Dieselman

My very first post in this forum. I will have a look for the thread you refer to, but in case I cant find it would you be able to post a link please.

I have just bought my daughter her first car. It is a C200K 2002 Coupe and she loves it, but I noticed the S/W switch is stuck on W similar to the OP. There is no malfunction being reported on the screen. Keen to see if I can fix it easily as we do not have a Mercedes mechanic in my town.

thanks
Crosis

Hello and welcome.

You may have had a better response if you had started a new posting about this, but let's see if we can help.

Here is the link to Diesleman's thread
Here's YouTube video, part of which will help understand how to access the mechanism.

"Oh well that should be a breeze" he said loftily with the confidence of a man whose tool box consists of a hammer and a rag....

Seriously though I will have a go on the weekend. Looks fiddly, but it can't be much harder than extracting and stripping a carb on one of my bikes. The degree of difficulty will be my daughter constantly pouting and complaining that I should wreck my own car and not hers <g>.

Thanks for the links.

Did you get the car from a dealer or private sale?
If it was from a dealer, you should have a minimum of 3 months warranty with it, so if it's within the 3 months take it back.

Otherwise, good luck with that. I think success or failure to fix the problem may depend upon the size of hammer you have.

Of course... it could just be a loose connection, or faulty switch.

If you find it beyond your capabilities, post up your location and hopefully someone can recommend a good indie Merc specialist nearby.
