This happened to mine today. Was out in it all morning. Nice n toasty. Tempreture outside quite close to freezing. Parked it up around 3pm. Went to start it up at 5pm. Sat in it. Hadnt even turned the key and BOOM !!!!! Back windscreen instantly shattered. With 2 slightly bigger holes on each side. Was quite surreal. Sitting there scared to look behind me after the the BOOM explosion of it. Turned round and Im looking thru the shattered glass into the sky. How bizarre. When I was finishing off some adjustments on the central parking brake adjuster under the seat I noticed that there was some broken glass under the back seat. So looks to me like this might be the 2nd time this has happened with this car. Ive had it for 5 years with no problems with any of the glass. Thankfully only costing £85 excess. Cheaper than buying new and having to pay to get fitted.

I was reading this. Doesnt seem to be un-usual afterall >>>>>>>

C class rear windscreen repeat shattering

I had a sunroof shatter whilst the car was just sitting outside the house some years back.

Just about to turn the car to get ready for a nightshift lol. It was bizarre. Thought I'de dreamt it n was hoping to wake up. But no it actually happened ! Eeeeeeeek !

Saw similar in Egypt once when a car was reversed out of a cool underground garage into hot sunshine.
I guess it can happen in cold situations if the glass is stressed when fitted.

Interesting point to make there. Worth saying it to the fitter when hes puting new one in.

Those of you around long enough to have driven cars with toughened or tempered glass will know that when a stone hits the windscreen that it can be heard cracking for ages before it actually shatters.
The old trick was to hold the palm of your hand to the window for some time in order to absorb the shock.

I would be inclined to believe that your rear window got hit with a stone chip some time earlier and finally shattered when it got some vibration or pressure as you closed the door.

EXPLODING Glass in Your Car: It's a Mystery....... - Adventure Autoglass

Strangely enough a 17 plate C class passed me on the motorway on monday morning with a shattered rear window - I thought it odd as it hadnt even been a particularly cold night either.

could have been tension around the glass, finally it burst into pieces.
someone could have thought that coppers and baddies playing with guns shooting at each other and stray bullets flying around them, one stray bullet hit your rear window? :eek:

I not related car-wise, but I had the same thing happen on a Smart For-2 Rear Screen, (which is actually the complete Tailgate).
I had just parked up, switched off and as you say, "BOOM"! Scared the shit out of me and the missus! I actually thought someone had gone into the back of us... And as you can imagine it's not to far from where you're sitting! It completely disintegrated in both directions!

Autoglass replaced it under Insurance. But it took 3 of them to do it! Seriously! And about 3.5 hrs! They said as there is hardware attached to the glass, ie. hinges and lock it is one of the hardest screens to replace!

But yeah. Scary man! :eek::eek::eek:

Many years ago I was with a mate in his Escort Mexico when it suddenly started overheating. Pulled over, and there was water spraying out of a neat round hole through the radiator! This was in Uxbridge ...
