Does anyone know what all the numbers mean in the vin.I know mine starts w108 16 which is a w108 chassis and the 16 means automatic but what do the rest of the numbers mean?

No it doesn't
108 = model designation
xxx = sub model (280S, 280SE etc)
x = steering wheel location (either 1 for lhd or 2 for rhd)
x = transmission (0 for manual or 2 for automatic)
xxxxxx = serialized production #

So if the vin is 108-068-1-2-001234 it would be a W108 model 280SEL 4.5 in left hand drive with automatic gearbox and the 1234'th built

Hope that helps

Thanks Alabbasi.My car was a south African import but I presume the numbers are the same.Would the engine have been assembled in germany and created to south Africa?:)

MB assembed cars in SA from KDKs, I think that if your car is SA assembled car, the 61 indicates this. I learned that a couple of years ago from a guy with an SA spec 450SLC

Thanks Alabbasi.It starts with w108 016 62.So I guess the 016 is 280s and the 62 is a south African automatic.Thanks Again

Yep, the 6 is the South African designation the 0 or the 2 would indicate whether automatic or manual.
