Sorry to disturb if this has already been explained.

I'd like to start the restoration of my 1971 230 W114.

I has been off the road since 1999.

I need at least to replace an half rear wing.
How to ?
Should I first remove the outer sills ?

Where can I find pictures of such a restoration ?

Thanks

I take it this is the lower half of the rear wing, below the bumper? Common problem area on the W114..

www.carpanels.co.uk list the inner and outer panels for this:-

I cant see why you need to remove the sill to do this???

Look up w113 or R113 restoration, as the chassis isw very similar, and the SL is more valuable = more restoration.

also check:-
floor where the handbrake cable goes in
C pillar
under spare wheel
bulkhead behind engine (remove soundproofing material)
wings (front) above headlight

You do know the w114 4 door is virtually worthless dont you?

Thanks for this.

About the value, It might be worthless for you but that's not my concern.
It has some value to me since it has always be in my family, since I remember crossing all europe several time in it, since I learned to drive in it, ...

It has also an interesting value compared to several others of my "classic cars" :)

Ok so its got sentimental value... fair enough....

Guy was just trying to get across that if you were trying to renovate it to sell as a 'classic' the return on your investment would be poor. It wasn't mentioned in the original post that it was a 'family' car with history.

As a familty heirloom, its priceless. To a prospective purchaser, it's worth next to nothing.

Good luck with your rebuild :)

Sorry - wasnt trying to be rude - sentimental value, as Howard has pointed out, is priceless. I just didnt want to see someone pour lots of money into a car thinking it was a classic, when it wasnt.

Theres lots of /8 (strichacht? sp?) websites out there, most are in german. (if you speak german)

You might want to consider putting in the 280 M110 engine (185 BHP) for modern useage - it should bolt straight in.

Hi....

Here's a schematic, might be helpful.

Cheers, Bill.

Very helpfull.

Can you tell me is this is drawing is comming from Mercedes or if some alternative parts makers are also providing these panels ?
I've never seen an "alternative" provider for the floors.

Guy, I understood what you meant.
I just think that cars are worth restoring if you like them.
I have 4 Matra Bagheera which don't have any restored value, which are known to rust like hell and for which I'm used to have to make the panels by myself...
My most valuable classic is a Healey Sprite, which is also the most easy to restore ...

For the engine, actually the reason I just decide to start is that I just bought a 280 engine ( however not the twin cam MB110 ) with no visible wear. Should be 150 or 160 Bhp ?

I've find these german web sites but English is easier for me.

Regards

If you get over this way, I have two M110 engines, looms, air boxes and a choice of manual or auto boxes that are up for sale. One engine (with manual box) has a slightly dodgy 3rd cylinder (cokes up the plug)....

Guy
