1984 230e
Hello all!

I'm having problems with the engine of my 1984 230e. It all started after a cold spell early this year. The car would occasionally stall when traveling at low speeds in 1st or 2nd gear. At first I could just restart the engine immediately. However, it got worse over time and after stalling, turning the key would do nothing (electrics all come on fine), but I found that usually waiting for 3-5 minutes it could splutter into starting with some heavy revving. The worse case was when it wouldn't start for 12 hours (we cleaned the plugs but that didn't immediately help, but the next morning it started up first time). The latest issue is power to the drive shaft (I think / assume?) being intermittent - the car kind of chugs. I can rev the engine smoothly but the car doesn't respond and then does and then doesn't so it kind of jolts along as if it is falling in and out of gear. This happens in reverse also. The engine also vibrates more than usual while idle. These problems probably occur every 1 in 5 journeys, so often the car runs pretty smoothly apart from the increase in vibration (which isn't major).

I had the car checked at a local garage and they could not find anything wrong with it but I think they just checked the very basics, as the problem wasn't occurring at the time they couldn't help much. I was planning on booking it into (an expensive) specialist to find the problem but I'd rather avoid a hefty bill if I can get a local garage to fix it instead. Hopefully, someone might have an idea of what the problem could be from the above? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

There are two things required to make cars of that vintage run sparks and fuel. Sounds as if you might have a fuel supply problem. If the car is K jetronic [ injection] then it could be several things-failing fuel pump or relay, blocked fuel filter, blocked tank exit strainer [ debris/rust in tank] water in fuel. With ignition it could be distributor, coil, ballast resistors or a dodgy ignition switch. If the car is an intended daily driver I would recommend a move to an electronic distributor.

Thanks very much for info! Sounds like I better get the experts to take a look. Cheers
