w123 300TD automatic gearbox...dead?

Hi,

Was hoping someone may be able to help me;

I think the autobox on my 300td is dead although it gave no prior warning so I'm wondering if it could be something else.

I was coming to the end of a 70 mile motorway journey and suddenly the engine was reving on accelaration. I ground to a halt, engine running fine but no connection to the wheels at all, in all positions S,L,D,R. In Park it makes a loud ticking/knocking in time with revs.

Could this be something else? Diff? driveshaft? I haven't had a chance to have a look yet but would be very grateful for any suggestions,
