I have one. Mine is 124 300te 4Matic. Just completing her restoration the 4Matic is fully functional. She has just had the main gearbox re-built, after the reverse band packed up. I love her.

As much as i love a W124 4Matic its not the same as that jacked up W123, i've never seen one like that. Just out of interest are the gibbons for the 4x4 inside the usual gearbox or does it use another system to get the drive to the front wheels?

No. It has a separate transfer box bolted to a standard gearbox. The front drive shafts actually go through the coils in the front springs. Which looks amazing but works extremely well.

Now that is cool.

Don't think Mercedes ever made a 4X4 version of the W123? I doubt the estate pictured is 4wd but possibly has a heavy duty raised ground clearance suspension. Most 4x4 W123 conversions you see are body shells grafted on to an existing 4x4 Ladder chassis from another manufacturer.
Even the original W124 4matics were a joint development with Steyr-Daimler-Puch (now Magna Steyr), who still manufacture the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Austria.

There wasn't a W123 with 4WD from the factory . Why do you think the one in the picture was ?

I know it is sitting quite high , or looks to be , but different springs and spacers could achieve that . All I see under the car in the picture are the normal tie rods for the steering .

Mercedes-Benz did use W123 estates as emergency breakdown vehicles and they were liveried up as per the one in the picture .

It is possible that the 4 matic system was prototyped in earlier models before being released in the W124 ; if anything had been released for the 123 it would more likely have been a mechanical system with components taken from the G Wagen , but I don't think the picture shows anything other than a 'normal' W123 support vehicle .

How good of them to be getting a nice young lady out of a snow drift. One feels this might be the start of a German "specialist" video...

Bit of a bind if/when those springs snap.

I keep waiting for this happen. Still on the original springs since 1985. Hey ho. My C55 is on its third set with my C240 not far behind (one front and one rear snapped in a year).

I think with the 124 they cheated and used steel. Where as in the later cars they gave in to superior design and went for brittle chocolate. Same thing with the lousy gearbox. Started playing up when the car was barely 30 years old, shocking. Not like my C55 it has a season ticket to the AMG garage. Last week the undertray fell off (I kid you not) Looks like the cardboard studs that hold it up must have gone soggy in the rain - dratt.

Yup I am in that thread. So still available from the dealer as new part then?

I wouldn't bet on it! Best to try them to see- sometimes some parts are still listed but when you come to order them - they are out of stock. :( If still available well worth ordering a couple if you have a w124 4matic :thumb: --- in the event you don't ever use ' em an orderly queue will form to buy them off you should you ever advertise them for sale. :bannana:

Otherwise its a " custom wind" from a coil spring manufacturer I imagine
