My 1981 240TD has this annoying occasional clunk from the rear and after checking everything I can see and lever with a crowbar, nothing has any play. The car is young in mileage (122K KMS) and has the self-levelling rear suspension which seems to work perfectly. I have changed the pressure cylinders and roll bar and chassis mounts so I am now looking at the springs and 'shocker'.
The removal of the hydraulic rams seems to be deceptively easy in the manual - remove the top rubber cover inside the car, remove the hydraulic line, unbolt top and unbolt bottom. Is it really this easy? If I do this I can check it and also check the spring to see if it is broken.
In the same vei,n, if anyone has any other suggestions why I have this clunk at low speeds unrelated to the road surface and unrelated to speed, I would be more than grateful!

thanks

IIRC The rear differential is supported by a large rubber bracket and the subframe has front mounts- any sloppiness in these may result in "clunks"
this is a useful collection of W123 how -to's

Exhaust system is another candidate.
