I recently had my tracking done - 1983 2.0 petrol W123 saloon. The garage was superb, they had a magnificent machine which printed out the alignment details in full blown 3d colours before they did it, and after.
They said the alignment was out because the car has been lowered. I know quite a bit about cars, but I did not know this car had been lowered prior to me buying it. It had shiny new springs, shock absorbers, brake calipers, discs and pads of course, new drive shafts, proper carpets, new exhaust, new tyres and had been so superbly renovated that they had even found the original seat material and stitched in a new patch where the driver's trouser button wears the bolster area. I get toots from knowledgeable drivers when they overtake me. And that's not because I have been holding them up!
The alignment garage said the car had been lowered, the new springs must be shorter than the originals, and if I get the original length springs to raise the car to what it should be, the steering would have to be done again.
Three questions:
1) Do I only need springs to raise the height?
2) would the shock absorbers need changing as well?
3) most important, what is the wheel arch height on a standard car? So I can tell how much higher it would be if I did change the springs.
I am of a Certain Age where entry and egress would be easier on a higher car.
And then of course to complete the job I would need to ditch the alloy wheels and get proper steel ones with proper MB coloured hub caps.
