W123 steering good or not?

Father had a couple of W123 estate (230T?) and I found the steering pretty vague in the straight ahead position, reminiscent of Series Landrovers that I was also driving. Is this how they are, or were they both faulty?
I am targeting a rust free 190e as my next car, but was reminded of and tempted by the W123 coupe today (C123? CE123?). Utterly beautiful, but if they all have vague steering I might stick with the 190e dream.
Advice appreciated!

Mine steered fine. Initially (when I got the car) there was looseness but I adjusted it out - a simple task.

Thanks, yes some research indicates the 123 is recirculating ball (like the Series Landrovers) where the later cars were, I think, the more precise rack and pinion. Probably father's cars weren't adjusted quite right. At least one wouldn't self centre after a bend.

Yep, recirculating ball.
Frequent problem is ove rtightening when attempting to adjust play out of the system. It feels right when doing the adjustment but is far too tight in operation and binds the steering. Backing the adjustment off a touch cures it.
