Afternoon all,
does anyone know who the water pump O.E. manufacturers were as I have finally had the first failure of anything after 22 years and I have an aversion to forking out nearly £500 on a Merc' badged one. I don't trust the adverts that say OEM as most are BS. Cheers....Dean

£500 ???

The M104 is basically a M103 with a different head , and the M103 is basically a M102 with two extra cylinders ; I would expect all to use the same water pump .

When I replaced the water pump in my 190E a few years back , I could have got a pattern one from ECP for around £60 ; the genuine MB one was around £130 including a surcharge since this was an exchange item ; I found Glen Henderson had one on the shelf , which they discounted somewhat , and after I returned my old one it had ended up costing me around £80 .

I would certainly baulk at paying £500 for one .

As I thought , a quick look on ECP and all water pumps for M102/3/4 have part numbers 201220xxx . While there is some slight variance from one engine to another ( and you do want to get the correct one ) they are basically all the same design , all look superficially similar and prices ( on ECP ) range from under £80 to £125 , so I would say that £500 is definitely a rip off .

I might have a look on eBay.de since parts availability is much better over there and there are places which do sell genuine parts at a good saving . Lott Autoteile are one I regularly buy from .

Thanks Derek, I really want an O.E. one. The going rate for a Merc' one is 480 and a NOS one is going on ebay for 444. The only other one I would go with is a Behr/Hella as they are OE for other water related bits but nobody has any stock that I can find.

I also noticed that ECP are selling Mahle water pump gaskets , I don't know if they make pumps but I know they are one of the leading makers of pistons and used by MB

For water pumps I've heard bed reports about Meyle. And about many other Meyle parts.

Graf, Mahle and Laso may be better choices.

Febi is a lottery but sometimes you can score.

Good hunting.

If you can find one go for the BEHR item, those were the original factory fit. I've used Borg & Beck pumps many times without issue.

The pump from a m103 or a m104 3.0 wont fit your engine as the connection to the cylinder head is different. It must be listed for the m104 280/320.

I'm not sure if you still can, but Mercedes used to sell re-built pumps.
