Hi All,

Here is a pic of my lovely 220CE and i love her to bits!!! I have a problem where on cold starts it starts at approx 1000 revs and then slowly drops less than 500 and then cuts the engine out. I have to accelerate for about 2 mins to warm her up and then she is ok but still shakes the engine a bit.

My mechanic has changed over the throttle body and a full service has been done on this car, the OVP relay has been checked and the fuse is fine and its getting a tad frustrating now. Anyones help is much appreciated to get her back fully functional.

Many thanks in advance!!

Maybe the mixture is too lean? has he tried to change this at all?.

It is an all electronic engine, with all functions for fuel and ignition controlled by the one computer, so no chance of manual adjustments.

Check the regeneration valve on the OS inner wing (has MOT on top).

You should feel and hear it pulsing after the engine is fully warmed up and has been running for at least 2 minutes at operating temperature.

If it is not pulsing at all then it may have stuck in the open position and letting in fumes from the petrol tank into engine from starting, and this should not happen.

Check that the sensor that tells the engine ECU what temperature the engine coolant is --is functioning OK. Êàòàëîã
The engine may be running weak for other reasons as has been said --some sort of inlet manifold air leak-- have a look at the spark plugs which should give an indication of running a weak mixture.
love those AMG ducktail spoilers- had one on my last 190.

Thanks guys!!!

I will have this checked out properly next week as i am going to be pretty busy this week. I've spoken to my mechanic and hopefully he's going to have the car next monday or tuesday. Fingers crossed!!

UPDATE - All of a sudden i have looked at the engine and have realised that the water level in the coolant tank is down badly and that there is a leak somewhere, i thought the head gasket is on its way out but the oil is fine and looks normal. However, i feel as if there is a problem with the water pump and the thermostat, as i can hear the thermostat vibrating and making a loud tapping noise. I'm having these two items and a new radiator installed next week and lets see what happens.

Any other advice is welcome as always and i just want to get her back on track as a C124 should be!!

Thanks again!!

Sounds as if your system is pressurising which may unfortunately be a sign the head gasket is gone. Is there an oily scum in your your radiator header tank? Get the coolant topped up first and remove all air by gently massaging the lower radiator hose. Start from cold and check to see if the top hose goes hard with pressure as the engine warms up-this is a sign of combustion gases in the coolant. You can also use a exhaust gas analyser probe to check for exhaust gases in the coolant. The hesitancy when cold may be due the presence of water which has been sucked into the combustion chambers as the engine cooled. If your water pump is leaking the fan usually sprays coolant under the bonnet at a level in line with the fan rotation.
