Hi,

230TE 1988 Manual

have had this noise with the car for a while, with the car having been serviced etc, so it can't be too serious. The garage say it's normal !!

...but it's not very pleasant to have people say they can hear the car before they see it.!! You can't hear it with the windows closed, but when you open them, and especially if alongside a wall or something to bounce the noise back.

It's like a bearing, but not a whine, and changes with engine revs. First thing on a cold start it is not present, but increases as the engine and other parts warms up. Could it be one of the pumps running off the fan-belt or fan-belt pulleys?

Any ideas?

Thx

It could be as you think, reading your post I see your car is a Manual. Is the sound comming from the clutch release bearing. Just wondering.

more details...

had a closer listen today.

When starting first (after night in the cold), get the usual (tappet?) clatter for 5 secs, then all is ok for about 60-90 secs, where-upon the noise starts up and is then apparent all the time. The engine is running sweetly for these 60 secs, so it must be whilst something is running up to normal. Could it be one of the water/hydraulic pressurised systems (eg power steering, water cooling, self-levelling rear suspension, braking)? Pumps running of the fan-belt for only the first two of these I guess?

Viscous fan bearing?

Fan Belt dirty

Well, car was in for an inspection at Deutsch-Marque in Edinburgh, and they said this was a common problem with dirt on the poly-v belt. A quick fix with a bit of emery paper on the flat side of the belt has sorted this noise out!

Well done, DM.

Thx all for your suggestions! :p

something so simple .... and sounds quite serious and ££££££.
