Hello this is my first time using this forum, hope you can help me...... I purchased my J reg. 230 about a year ago, after a NON mercedes mechanic messed around with it (didn't have a clue) he upset the whole thing, anyway got it to run and change gear at the right revs now, but there is an intermittent ticking noise comming from the top end of the engine but only now and again sometimes it's loud and other times hardly noticable.........does anybody have the same noise and how can it be made go away...it's just not right a mercedes that ticks.

It'll be a hydraulic tappet. Locate the noisy tappet, remove & replace it. Standard for these engines

Yes , i had the same on my 230CE a while back ...

If the mechanic is good he will be able to isolate which one it is and replace just that one ....

Cost me £60 all in to have it done ...

Does anybody know of a good mercedes mechanic in the Glasgow area..... I've heard that "tj o'neils" in carntyne are good any comments ?

Before condemning the hydraulic tappets try using a flushing oil. Hydraulic tappets don't normally fail as such they just get gummed up. A flush may well fix it.

The ticking may also be the exhaust manifold gasket in need of replacing.

Are the tappets on a 230 hydraulic ? or am i talking nonsense ? :o
