Hi this is for members who own a W124 mainly the 260E because the speedos do change from one car to another. This job i have done was to be the first job after the car i was given to me. But ended up as the last, due to the fact it was a bit of a problem getting the speedo out,so i did all the jobs i could for mot. So yesterday it was nice and warm as this helps you pull it out .To cut it short the clock was removed with 2 butter knives and 2 flat pieces of plastic. The helpers were pushed in and with the help od the hooks out it came. After removing wire plugs and 2 bulbs i had it on the bench .Strip down is not to bad ,just the removal of the pointer for the speed, this i did with a fork .Also you will find a clock type spring ,mind you put it back in the right way . A camera was very uesful. So now i did the check and the shaft for the milage had moved across and in doing so the gear wheel was no longer in contact with the drive gear.Next step was to check the metal pot gear ,that was loose ,it meant removing the shaft enough to get it off the shaft to rough it up to take the super glue. Thats when you push the 7/32 drill inside just enough to remove pot gear. Before all this make note of the location of the numbers., and tape them with selotape.Push in the drill so you can remove the potgear to clean up inside .After i roughed up the shaft and cleaned both items i put a spot of glue on the pot gear , check the pot gear location i put mine on number 5 before i remover it so i knew its location on assembly dont use to much or it will stick both pot gear and the next one together. So keep it in the up possition after you glue it so glue will run the other way away from the plastic gear ,Now put it back in place and in the housing in the speedo. My petentiometer was playing up so got in there and the springs had come out inside ,all fixed .Yet to fix it back in .Any questions jist ask.
