W124 300-24 strangeness after complete renewal of fuel pump pack.

Whats the gas tank cap seal like Ray?
I filled up yesterday and got the usual woosh on removing the cap.

And I was pretty confident of the pump spec.

We're going to check again for any leaks around the pumps.

More as it happens.

I think if fuel is in the FD then it should fire up immediatley . So could we both be experiencing late spark to plugs ?

I think it's a question of fuel pressure at the distributor, rather than just presence of fuel. My impression is that the pressure is dropping overnight (normal) and not immediately increasing on priming of the pumps. As said, the second attempt is immediate.

Oddly, today, it was quicker from cold start, first attempt. Not immediate but perhaps 1 second of churning. I know I'm being a bit nerdy about this as many would be more than happy with a 1 second cold start. It's just that it was immediate before our lovely new pump pack was installed.

Performance on the move is really as new. No complaints at all.

As for plugs, the entire ignition system, from coil to plugs was renewed in 2020 with 100% MB parts, including a complete new lead set. Again, the change came with the new pump pack.

On Thursday, we'll be chacking meticulously for leaks around the pump pack.

I'll keep you posted.

All the best.

Interesting update. Grilling weather here and car in the sun. Hasn't been started for 48+ hours.

Instant start.

I wonder what that tells us, if anything?

Ray its like the blind leading the blind haha .. Well i have been looking to get the centre box replaced . Firtst shop wanted to rip the whole system off Ray ..3/4 of it is staimless i told them forget it, and came away . After 2 days of finding a centre box i finaly ordered one ...And i am not very sure of the place it came from Buycarparts .co.uk ..only to find out after i get the invoice that it came from AUTODOC . Then there was a problem finding gaskets for the c/box ended up buying catalitic converter mounting kit .When it comes i will just drop in the shop and ask them to fit it ..Reason the first shop wanted o pull the lot off the rear 3/4 was styainless steel .And centre box was welded to the S/S 3/4 .... REASON FOR THIS IS - another stoty .Trev

I see AutoDoc under a number of guises. I've never had any problem with them. And a chat line that will confirm compatibiliy. But I've never needed that as I always cross-refer from the genuine MB part number.

Good luck with the exhaust.

By the way, that reminds me, my son had middle and end parts of my exhaust in his spare bedroom until his girlfriend moved in. Then they were relagated to the barn!

But he still has a complete leather interior for the CE in his loft. I don't think madame ventures up there.

But on Saturday my son is going to collect a 1994 E280T. I'll be the backup driver. Interesting project.

And when I'm at his place I want to retrieve from a coupé front seat a spring that I need for mine.

My cold starts are becoming quicker. Hot starts still perfect.

It is as if the fuel pressure, when cold, is being maintained better. But why?

More as it happens.

Ray Your getting there . I started the car up after 8 days , it was not instant, but it started and ran good on the road .I will try a new coil i have in the spares kit - lol . I have a new flow filter for the fuel distributor but i need to open up the hole in nte copper washer i purchased for it,because my measurements were out when i sent for them . Have new seals for the tank sensor so i can remove it, and i hope it will clean up with contact cleaner. Both seals have come for the centre silencer .

Ray update on the fuel sensor ...Had a 46mm socket come from Ebay .So i started on the job .Well it was more of a job to get to it the covering over the rear of the fuel tank was hard to remove [out of reach] But i did manage to pull out the sensor ..The float was stuck in the 3/4 part on the centre spindle that the float runs on ..rust had set in to it . But after cleaning it off and refitting its fine now . As for the silencer that was a no go in one way ..the centre muffler i bought was not any good after all .We found out the whole system is stainless steel ..So i now have a centre box going cheap ..The chap at the garage re welded a few places on the s/s silencer and i was hapy with that . Update on the fuel pump pack replacement.

Instantaneous start has returned. Starting got quicker over a period of a few weeks and now it roars into life immediately.

Still trying to diagnose a shudder under braking and high speed - 90 mph? - vibration, probably linked to the shudder.
